I didn’t care for the BL Pre sequel’s. BL 2 is a must play if you haven’t.
Yep, for sure.
I don't want to be a sponge, watching other people doing things. I want to do things.
Gaming is great for honing reflexes and mental acuity.
...and if playing MMO or co-op you can enjoy social interaction with others.

Together do they follow a storyline,
so that it would be better if I played the Pre-Sequel,
to have a better grasp of the story in BL2?
BL2 is stand alone. I actually played it first. It was so good I went back and played one. The Pre-Sequel has an entirely different feel to it. It has a dare I say millennial/snowflake feel to it. People may say I am imagining it but that is how it struck me.
