Well, the Savannah Sand Gnats are already gone.
The term “Minor” League is demeaning.
All leagues should be “Major”, or “Major Major Major Major”.
I see what you did there.
What about the Rome Braves?
Seriesly.
Are there too many minor league teams out there? Young men chasing a dream. Romantic. The best prospects are in AA. AAA is too much hitting. Prices are low and not a rip off.
In 1952 and 53 we liked to watch the Panama City Fliers.
Class D Alabama Florida League. It was good baseball. One I remember was Cal Ripkin Sr. Now people watch TV etc.
“Klinger will weep if his Mud Hens are disbanded.”
I don’t think you or Klinger need to worry. My guess is that the first to go might be the duplicates; some/many teams have two or more Pioneer, Instructional or even A teams. I don’t know the count if all those were added up but it might come close to 42. I think the Mudhens are AA or AAA, right? No sweat; Klinger should buy a new dress to celebrate!
Bump
I read a piece about a decade ago that said that only one play out of six will ever make it to the big league level, and half of them will be out of baseball within three years of that achievement.
Personally, I don’t see a reason to have A, AA, and AAA all existing. I would dump the A-league entirely. I do agree that entry and food prices are very fair at minor league games, and you could take an entire family of four out for less than $60 (to include food and drinks). I will also note that parking is always free, and that the safety environment of almost all minor league parks is fantastic.
I would suggest that most talented players who go the community college or university route...only need a year or two at AAA-level....to make it onto the major leagues. I suspect if we did the numbers...more than two-thirds of players in the big leagues of today...are the college-path type players.
I would rather see EPL-style promotion and relegation. :)
Toledo is an easy commute to Detroit, about an hour when all lanes on I-75 are open, and bus tickets between the two cities are cheap.
With Erie's fantastic pitching staff ready to move to AAA and beyond, the Mud Hens look to be a powerhouse in 2020.
Not at the Salisbury, MD park, at least not in 2012 when I paid 3 bucks to park.
I also paid $1 to park at Scranton, PA's park for a game in 1995.

Not a problem here. We have our Sussex County Miners, of the Can-Am League. They were in first place the entire season, but lost the championship to the Jersey Jackals in a heart breaker. It was the only time in the season they dropped to second place.
The stadium is about 30 minutes from home. It’s spacious, modern. Ticket prices are reasonable ($10.00-$12.00), and food and drink prices are affordable enough that a family of four can enjoy a game without taking out a home equity loan. There is an excellent restaurant attached to the stadium. Local craft breweries showcase their products.
Attendance is generally good. The fans are friendly. No one has ever been beat up or puked on.
There is a SPECTACULAR fireworks show every Saturday night.
I have completely given up on televised sports and sports teams (NFL, MLB, NASCAR), but attend a Miners game whenever I can.
The Can-Am league has just merged with the Frontier League to create the largest independent league in baseball. There will be 14 teams playing a 96-game schedule in 2020.
The players play for the love of the game. Perhaps this will be the future of sports in the USA.
I’m all for it.
Havent been to a Tides game in 20 years. Id listen to them on the radio though on my commute.
They do have a nice waterfront stadium, which is served by the local light rail, that actually is a nice option to avoid traffic and parking, ($6.00), the only reason I know the parking fee, is I know someone who does parking for them.
Yep. Unless the player is a first round or sandwich pick, the chances of ever appearing in the majors is less than 50%. No business wants that kind of fruitless overhead.
Independent leagues will probably expand to take advantage of dreamers, and theyre fun too.
