So far, so good, as incidents with sharks and people in the water are not making news here in Mass.

We have a month and a half more to go and no doubt ocean going oriented people are being cautious, concerning sharks.

Not a big percentage of beachgoers in the water and many looking for signs of a shark. Multiple beach closings when many shark sightings occur.- Tom

If they are “tagged”, the should be dead already! WTF are those marine-environment morons thinking?

Does PETA have a shark fetish too?

Now if we can only convince the sharks that only properly registered and tagged sharks can have teeth, the problem will be solved.

Beach season is pretty much done in New England after Labor Day.

You have touched on one of the many factions involved to make this an unsolvable problem, as long as White sharks and seals are Federally protected.

Some people want the sharks wiped out like before the Federal Protection, and others argue they are in their natural element and it is us who have to give way.

There are many other groups and some of the people who are trying to mitigate the problem are not inviting the public to get involved because of so many hot disagreements . -Tom

That is true as far as swimmers go.
There is another group of surfers in wet suits who will be out there until the snow flies.

About 2 hours ago I was watching 5 surfers riding the left over "Dorian" Swells coming into Scituate.
I am sure this is going on up and down the coast.-Tom

What are sharks afraid of?

Could you put some sort of sound emitters in beaches to scare sharks away?

I am sure every mitigation idea is under consideration.

from the article
Researchers at Woods Holes studied at least 25 scenarios that could act as a protection for both humans and sharks from the other.

Good then Dolphins with lasers on their heads, trained to hunt sharks will probably be the winning strategy.

Lol- gotta love New Englanders- Tough son of a guns lol

there’s also another group that files in right after labor day- usually Canucks- they seem to stay till around November- then the sidewalks roll up and everyone goes home- at least that’s how it used to be back in the 80’s- guess they didn’t like the summer crush of folks- they tended to be older- retired folks-

Alternatively, if we can't drive them away, maybe we can lure them away.

IIRC, Amity Island imposed a news blackout in "Jaws"...

I think most critters should have a status somewhere between “endangered” and “nuisance”...
