I was driving from San Diego to Los Angeles to visit an elderly cousin who lived in the P.E.O. Home in Alhambra. She invited me to stay for dinner and I was surprised that the elderly ladies all knew who Elvis was.

I was 10 years old. My family and I were parked in Sambo's parking lot.

We waited until the radio announcement was over, then went in.

I was actually in Tupelo Mississippi, a graduate student at Mississippi State! I was involved over in field research just outside of Tupelo.

I was with a group of graduate students doing round the clock creek samples of fish, water chemistry and benthic (bottom dwelling) Arthropods.

In between samplings we hung out in a crowded dive bar on the Main Street. The bar had standing room only, all broadcasting was preempted by coverage of Elvis’s death. Everyone was glued to the tiny single TV in the bar, and people were openly weeping.

I was 22 years old, I’ll never forget that very sad time in Tupelo.

Working a summer job doing Aluminum Siding and Gutter installations in Muscatine Iowa.

There were 2 or 3 crews and we’d come in at the end of the day to unload scrap and park the company trucks. Old Man Fxxxxx (to be differentiated from his son with the same first name) who had started the business but largely turned it over to his son and son-in-law - always came out to make sure we didn’t shirk off any of the scrap aluminum into the debris pile - is the one who broke the news to us.

I also remember my first nephew was born that same day or maybe the next. I wondered if maybe he’d be the reincarnation of Elvis, but really was kind of nerdy. Good kid, but no ‘cool’ quotient.

I was 9 years old and running around barefoot in my back yard with my brother. My Mom came out of the house and told us both. I remember thinking OMG, Elvis is dead. My family always watched his “specials” when they were aired on TV.

I was visiting my mom in The Dalles, Oregon. I was riding around with my with my fat aunt and she was about to drive off from someplace she was visiting, when the news broke over the radio. She got out of the car and walked around for a few minutes while she cried.

I had just moved to Chicago and it was my first day working at - are you ready - Playboy.** Also on that day was a massive employee reduction, including 5 VPs, who were laid off (so to speak).

** honestly, the most boring job I ever had

She was a rather obese woman, wore mostly mu-muus, smoked a lot. There are many other words I could’ve used to describe her. ‘Fat’ was one of the kinder ones.

Elvis was one of her all-time faves. Even though we didn’t really like each other, I could understand why she was so upset.

If she smoked she MUST have been evil....you should have shunned her.
