Goodie for you. I’m not shooting anyone unless they’re at my door trying to get in. I have this thing about wanting to go to heaven . Anyone wants my car go ahead I’m call 911 on that and deal with insurance later.
I was going to make a point about conservatives living in counties that are not run by social justice types, but in doing so, I found that Lake County, where this took place, voted +20 for Hillary in 2016.
So, can’t make the point there, but I will say this many is very lucky NOT to be charged, considering he lives in a blue county and the racial mix involved.
Bottom line, if you do plan to defend yourself, and particularly your property, it’s still best to live in a red county, or things may not end well for you.

This man is a DEMOCRAT...not that anyone here needed to be told.
Actually, Mike Nerheim, the Lake County State Attorney (which, I guess, means District Attorney) is an elected REPUBLICAN. His office, and maybe he, himself, was the one who made the final call.
Again, the man doing the shooting is very lucky, he had a political ally (most likely) who got to choose whether to charge him or not.

He was outside with the perp approaching him with a great big knife in his hand. So your scenario isn’t applicable. Nice try.

So do I. But that don’t mean I’m in a big hurry to get there. And there’s a very big chance that’s exactly where this man would be if he hadn’t fired his weapon.
So I’m not seeing the blame to be attached to this man. 5 people were on his property illegally after 1 am. One of them was armed with a lethal weapon and according to him approached him threateningly.
So he shot and killed the one with the weapon causing the others to flee. If all that is accurate, and it certainly appears to be, here in Illinois that’s a clean shooting. And decent folk here applaud him for it.
This was a gang of violent, feral criminals the population of which has been reduced by one at the hands of this poor man. They are quite well known to the rude joke that is the Cook County justice system. The rest of the trash are now looking at 25 to life for causing the death of their fellow feral criminal.
The ONLY downside here is that the long suffering decent taxpaying citizens of Illinois will have to house, feed, and care for these worthless meat sacks for the next few decades. But even that’s a bargain when you consider the damage they would be doing to other innocent people if they were on the streets.
I hope and pray you’re never put in a similar situation. I really do. But judging the actions of a 75 year old man who was quite obviously in fear of death or grievous bodily harm and had to make a split second decision seems very unfair to me.

He shouldn’t have confronted them in the first place. I have security cameras outside of my property and up my driveway. I would have called 911 and waited. In my opinion he escalated this situation.

one thing is certain if
the man was unarmed it is very
likely he would be the one in
the morgue thismorning.

“What would the founders think of this law?“
They’d probably be in favor. In their time you could be hanged for rape, any felonious homicide, and a laundry list of other offenses. And since these laws have been adjudicated all the way to SCOTUS more than once they are quite clearly Constitutional.
So the lesson here is “don’t be out at 1am stealing from people while threatening them with a deadly weapon because there’s a very good chance you’ll end up dead or facing a very long prison sentence.”
And I’m perfectly okay with that. If more people in a certain demographic learned that lesson we would have a far better world to live in.

Legally speaking he was perfectly within his rights. Maybe it wasn’t the smartest play but he wasn’t breaking any laws. As far as escalating things goes that is completely on the dead kid who decided to go at this man with a lethal weapon in his hand. He could de-escalated things himself by saying “Oh ***! Let’s get out of here!” and running away.
But he didn’t. So who really did the escalating here? In my mind it’s the dead kid and his merry band of thugs. Now if the kid had been running away and the man shot him in the back things would be very, very different.
But apparently that’s not what happened. Instead of de-escalating by immediately un-assing the mans property he decided to move towards him with a great big knife in his hand. That’s a MAJOR escalation on his part.
And it’s an escalation that got him dead. Righteously so in my opinion.
So we will have to agree to disagree.

Because of these complexities, it is important to remember that involvement in an inherently dangerous crime that results in fatalities can lead to murder charges for all those involved.

Trust me, my certitude is tested almost daily! I am just finishing up my coffee and heading into 53206 in Milwaukee for work! Wish me well.
Read the little punks were in a Lexus and immediately knew it was stolen. A few words later and, yeppers, it was stolen.
That’s one kid who won’t be stealing cars or worse. Perhaps one of the others learns a lesson.

If someone (white black Asian or Vulcan) was on my property at 1 am , I’ll be shooting... Of course, I have security and if do get through, oh well, they are doing crime...
