go back to the old ways, using installation DVDs or thumb drives, based on a checklist of just what you want.
IIRC Ubuntu can still be installed just like that, even from a Minimal CD (NOT DVD), DVD or USB drive will also work.
No costs involved.
Free and open source.
I did purchase software for my security cameras.

Ever hear about Munich?
That’s all the help you get.
Try Avast!
I would install linux Mint dual boot on those win 10 machines. You would love it. I have helped several here switch over and I think they like it.
There is now... Most new Linux versions have a complete easy install package, a few clicks and it does everything for you including setting up your partitions and all. And the cool thing is that a whole package with extra software programs like Libre office and Etc. is only 2 gigs compared to Windows 18 gigs, so this means you can download it and make your install disk on just one DVD disk if you have a DVD burner. Or you can download a small additional program that creates a USB stick to boot from and install. I have all the info laid out if you are interested, just PM me.
You have a kind heart Openurmind...
I’m lucky to have found the ‘anykey’ if you know what I mean - but thanks anyway for the offer.
“Windows 10 has extreme telemetry that many people consider to be spying.”
And yet, these same people embrace Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google, Chrome, Amazon, Brennan, Comey, Obama, etc.
FYI: Win 10 Telemetry is easily disabled.
A slight nudge in the direction of Linux.
A friend in his eighties ask about MS dropping support for his operating system. I suggested Ubuntu and sent a link with the basic information. He was not any form of a computer person, a retired bank exec, and claimed he never used a computer before retirement.
Thinking I’d stop by and do the install for him, instead, I received a note that Ubuntu was working well and he was sending the email with the new OS!
After that, I’d tell everyone he was my new Linux guru.
I did help with a few minor adjustments online and by phone.
When my wife’s laptop quit, about a week out of warranty, I went with Ubuntu because the install is much faster.
Our daughter stopped by and said, oh no, she will have a hard time and hate it!
After a brief overview and a few changes to her liking, that it. No wailing, weeping or gnashing of teeth.
She just used it.
Some differences between MS Word and Libre Office Writer, but she overcame them.
It is free and you can try it without making any changes to your computer by running from a disk or USB memory, slower but works.
At the time Ubuntu was considered among the easiest path to Linux. That changes often with new versions.
YMMV.
I use a Samsung 12.5 tablet (I have 3 of them) , rarely ever connect keyboard... OS is Win 10 Pro.
I would prefer a Quality 12.5 Tablet with Ubuntu, but none exist.
Specs wanted at a minimum.. Intel i5 .. i7 would be preferable (or equivalent AMD), 8Gb Ram, 256 SSD (but would settle for 128). 64 bit.
Two USB 3.1 C ports would be nice and a removable battery, but neither is going to available as far as I can see.
So I am looking into installing Ubuntu or Mint on a Samsung 12.5 Tablet, anyone done this?
My wife uses a Samsung t900 12.2” tablet, and likes it the way it is!
If it stops working, I might try it.
That said, not something I would attempt by myself.
I would call my guru, for his assistance. Guru is fearless! Guru unconcerned if it bricks, not his toy!
IIRC You need to be root, for the install.
One of many instructions for rooting.

One problem with Microsoft Windows 10 is that it has a lot of “phone home” Cortana stuff built in; many are leery of being spied on, especially when company databases are being hacked and end-user information gets disclosed on the dark web.
So the risk is not just that Microsoft will have your personal information and sell it, but that the bad guys will get a copy too...
What kind of phone do you use
Non-sequitur: just because one platform is leaking like a sieve does not mean people won’t (or shouldn’t) care about another...
Me, I would recommend a dumb phone (the battery will last for a week) and a Palm Pilot...I really regret that my non-wireless Palm won’t work anymore.
So you use a dumb phone?
