I made that point on Reddit.
If Italy had stay neutral, or actually followed through on their commitment to protect Austria from German takeover, Italy would have been just like Spain post-war, just likely abandoning Fascism in the 50s because it was never that powerful of a force, and Mussolini wasn’t really that much in control of the place as he made it out to be.
“Il Duce himself was a die-hard Socialist, all his younger years and until he got on the Nazi bus”
That’s more like switching seats on the same bus. He stopped being a socialist marching under the red flag, and started being a national socialist under the red swastika banner.
That’s like switching from Episcopal to Presbyterian.
Gonna be fun seeing all the Brits invading Madrid for the Champions League Final. Love to be a fly on the wall in the bars.
In a lot of ways, that’s right
I have an Italian race bike. Doesnt that count for something.
“How else could you define it? Starting a brutal colonial war on Abyssinia is not exactly a nuanced act.”
You might look at how France, Belgium and Britain acted in their colonies during those decade before and after it. In fact, in 1868 the Brits did the same thing in Abyssinia. In 1879 the Brits disregarded a treaty set border and invaded Zulu land. There’s a movie about it. And you might want to review Bonaparte in Egypt. And also see Belgium in the Congo. The first genocide of the century.
Mussolini did nothing different that any other European power. I had an italian tour guide call him a “naughty boy”. Germans don’t speak of Hitler quite that way.
Probably true. It would be better than turning over Italy to the north africans.
You do raise a good point.
King Leopold of Belgium was probably the worst.
Deep down a part of me does think Europe’s problems with Muzzies is well-deserved for what they did in the past.
Just leave the countries that aren’t guilty out of it.
“He chose to use Mustard Gas on Ethiopian civilians, that alone merited his eradication from the planet.”
Meh, in 1919 the Brits conducted the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and machine gunned around 2000 completely unarmed peaceful protesters, penned in within a walled area. Should George V be eradicated from the planet?
One must imagine the socialist utopia the left always dreams of rather than the horrific reality of their despotic systems of rule.
Mussolini also tried to invade Egypt and Greece. Both ended up kicking their butt and he turned to Hitler to bail him out.
You might want to look at a few things too, such as how silly the “everybody did it” argument looks when you apply it to somebody who dropped poison gas on civilians.
British soccer fans should be eradicated from the earth. Probably all Brits should also be banned from air travel.
I can actually see that point about Europe has had this coming
Seriously, how do you get your ass kicked by Greece?
It also may very well have saved Russia, because Germany had to postpone Barbarossa by a few critical months in order to bail out the Italians in the Balkans.
But they also have no right to force Poland into accepting refugees. That’s their lookout.
AdolfoH. was greatly inspired by Benito M..
As opposed to .303 bullets raking the crowd basically crowded into something the size of a stadium floor until all ammo was expended after about 8 minutes?
The differences are at best, academic.
Also, it is not a defense to say everybody did that. It is more of a pointing out of selective outrage. And when I see that it usually indicates a political objective. If someone is outraged by Italy in Abyssinia, but silent on France and British colonial behavior, that says a lot.
And counterintuitively, during the colonial period, the Germans were the least abusive to their possessions. They were also turning out to be good competitors. This is one of the causes of WWI.
Fans of Stalin will always talk of what he did domestically too.
No form of socialism brings order. It always becomes chaotic.
