Rick Barry used to mock himself as a white guy who could not jump - he was always comparing himself to Julius Erving - but that was not true.

He played 12 of 14 seasons without cartilage in his left (launching) knee. He seldom dunked because a layup was just as effective, and saved his knees from further abuse.

Photos of him at Miami and in early NBA show that he was extremely athletic: quick, fast, and able to sky for a rebound. He was double digits in rebounds in university, and in his Rookie-of-the-Year inaugural NBA season.

The proof of the pudding? His son, Brent Barry, used those genes to win the 1996 NBA Slam Dunk Contest. His father once attributed it to his Lithuanian genes.
