Several people have mentioned putting tape over the camera, which is good, but how can one block the mike? I don’t think that merely covering it over with foam would work, and turning it off in the device manager won’t deter a hacker. So, any ideas on disabling a built in mike? I’m thinking a tiny white noise generator to place over the mike. Hmm.
And then there is the misspelling in the message...
"Your internet camera has been activated for census purrposes"
Alexa only listens after you say Alexa...
I find the blue painters masking tape works best. It is easy to tear off a tiny piece for use, easy to remove/refresh and does not leave a sticky residue. I dont wear a tinfoil hat but I do work in IT.
Two words - electrical tape. Or black duct tape.
I’m thinking about using a silver mirror sequin taped over the tiny lens...a bit of turn about Nietzschean guerilla action, “...for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.

A good friend since we were knee high to a grasshopper and I got drunk a little while ago and got to talking, him more frankly than his usual self. He’s a programmer, won’t tell me what he does, won’t tell me where he flies off to for weeks at a time doing his programming, but he did tell me this that night -
“Always cover your camera, and buy a static sound generator to set next to the microphone unless you need to use it. Assume anything you say or do electronically at your desk is being recorded and analyzed by AI scanners looking for patterns when you’re doing anything on line now. Assume even if you’re offline and have it running it’s still keeping track of what is going on around you.”
“Phones are even worse than laptops however. Ever wonder why all the new phones are being built without removable batteries? Buy a sealed lead lined case to put it in any time you don’t want to be tracked or recorded, never assume your GPS is off, or your phone for that matter because it’s not as well.”
He then showed me his phone case he was given for traveling by whoever employs him now, completely shielded for sound and electronics, and he said his laptop case was also.
Anyone else I would have laughed at them as being paranoid and pictured them wearing a tinfoil hat, but he is one of the most stable and smart people I have ever met in my life who I know is involved in stuff he could never speak of openly, has been for a long time now.
That works when the "check engine" light on your car starts flashing too.........
Everybody I know just puts a piece of tape over the camera.
Interesting. No way I’ll be able to convince my kids, though.
I use one of those thin plastic post it notes (the ones designed to stick to pages of a contract to get to them easy. When I need the camera, I pull it off and put it back when I’m done.
Black electrician’s tape is your friend. Put it over the camera lens. It is low tech, cheap, and 100% guaranteed effective.
You have to wonder, why don’t computer manufactures offer a built-in sliding shutter to disable the camera?
Electrical tape is a good idea. I have a band-aid over my camera.
Not to worry, I just checked the main website for this and see that your camera is still working. BTW nice pj’s you have.
Heheh. Those aren’t PJ’s...they’re tattoos.
Its funny how by default, camera is set to “on”
I get those messages as well except there is no webcam and its a work computer so no porn. I always wondered why they didn’t include the picture they say they have.
We have HoneyPots on VM’s that bot-cruise through porn sites picking up the latest malware. Those guys can do some serious tinkering.
If you are going to do any serious browsing, create a Virtual Machine and do it.
I always wear an Obama mask when I’m on the computer. That way the NSA will immediately delete any compromising images.
