Corollary song by Hank Williams, Jr. - “Country Boys Can Survive.”
Some top performers in there, but King of the Road only 10?
And Ring of Fire and Jolene aren’t their artists’ greatest.
I have a special place for Micky Gilly’s “Room Full of Roses.”
I agree but you gotta admit Garth is one of the greatest entertainers in history. Close to Elvis.
Classic, in the Hank Williams style.
“In the Ozarks”, are you more of a bluegrass or a country Eric?
Glen Campbell Gentle on my Mind or Wichita Lineman could make it but not so sure it is country music.
I like both, plus Western Swing (Bob Wills.)
Years ago, I worked at a big regional C&W station and fell in love with “Room Full of Roses.”
Thanks. Sorry about the misspelling.
I want to register my vote for top country song of all time... Sneaky Snake by Tom T. Hall. Lol
I love those songs
I definitely would include Johnny Cash, obviously, but NOT “Ring of Fire”.
HEY, I don’t think the list is bad overall but if it doesn’t include the Okie from Muskogee it’s a total fail and I don’t see any Merle Haggard....
So, in a way, it’s a bit politically correct with all due respect to the writer.
Probably something from Johnny Horton too; and though, Marvin Rainwater is not the most well-known country singer, “Gonna Find Me A Bluebird” which he penned and sang is great... recorded by many.
Just off the top of my head, maybe Connie Smith or Dottie West should be in there. No Buck in the list either.
“Some Day Soon” written by Ian and Sylvia, I’d concur that the covers are usually better, Judy Collins, Suzy Bogus, Moe Bandy.
No Marty Robbins on the list either.
Not sure if Wabash Cannonball is too old for the list and it’s listed as folk music too; but an excellent song.
Tough challenge and I was tempted to just upload my entire C&W folder but I finally narrowed it down to these songs I particularly like:
Distant Drums - Jim Reeves
If I Could Only Win Your Love - Emmylou Harris
Lorena - Bobby Bare
L-O-V-E Love - Loretta Lynn
Nine Little Teardrops - Sue Thompson
Queen of the Silver Dollar - Dave and Sugar
Sweet Susannah - Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge
The Hands of the Man - Jerry Wallace
The Winner - Bobby Bare
There I Said It - Margo Smith
I can see the list giving certain recognition to some artists, I don’t know if Skeeter Davis recorded that many different songs but “End of the World” is great.
Bobbi Gentry’s “Ode To Billy Jo” is great, almost has a bit of Delta Blues, she is from Mississippi and she wrote the classic...
Dolly wrote most of her big hits, she deserves extra credit for that, “Jolene” is indeed, recognized as a clasic. The Bangles or one of those groups like that, even cover it.
Did the world start in 1962?
____________
LOL .... your right.
And trying to compile a list of "The 12 Best Country Songs of All Time" is almost as absurd as identifying the 12 best looking snowflakes (real snowflakes).
But .... whatever.
Skeeter Davis recorded over 30 separate studio albums. ‘End of the World’ was written specifically for Davis.
“The winner”? Seriously? And two Bobby Bare songs?
“Detroit City” is pretty good.
On a personal level, I am a fan of his song “Vincennes” (and indeed of most of his songs, he’s a great artist, great cover of ‘Miller’s Cave’ which Charley Pride also covers very well..)
Speaking of Charlies, Charlie Rich?? ‘Most beautiful girl’ or ‘Behind Closed Doors’, big pop hits at the least.
