Support Free Republic, Folks!
Yeah, I forgot to mention that, and “The Dance” is pure schlock. However, Garth Brooks was a huge star, hard to overlook. “Much Too Young to Feel This Damn Old” might have been a better choice, but the theme is too similar to “Amarillo by Morning.”
Yes, Ghost Riders by any one of a hundred different artists. The number one song in the world that works in any style of music, including C&W which was its origin, back in what, 1962?
I should add that I think Johnny Cash’s very best song is probably “Hurt”:

Jolene: NO
Garth: NO
My personal favorite: Charlie Rich, Rollin’ with the Flow
Coe has written some real heartbreakers as well:
I was waiting for that one.
Agreed.
Sorry . Any list without Gentleman Jim Reeves is pretending.
His voice is unbelievable. This classic song is top 10 on any list:

Talk about subjective. What about “Fancy”?
Define “country music.” Music is subjective,it is impossible to list a definitive ten best “country” songs of all time. So it’s your list? Who are you to have the audacity to do that? Nice songs though, like 8/10.
1948. There was a bright-yellow 78 rpm record of it in my grandparents’ attic in Missouri. Zot knows what that would be worth today.
“Kay’ by John Wesley Riles
Nothing from George?
My favorite from all time is BOB WILLS and THE TEXAS PLAYBOYS’ song I’M FEELIN BAD.
Lots of great western swing by Bob Wills or Spade Cooley left off this list.
Some good ones, but no Merle Haggard??
Likewise. I hated The Dance from day one. The theme is stupid from the git-go.
