Recent video coverage of a side door on the body near the paw was found to descend to a pool of water several stories down. I think it was on one of the Egyptology shows with that young Egyptian archaeologist on Ancient Aliens.
I don’t think the pool has been plumbed yet.
My choice is lion for apparent reasonns in construction of the body and paws. Situated and Faced toward Leo some thousands of years ago according to one astronomer’s calculations.
No one wants to admit that we are not the smartest creatures ever to inhabit the earth.
There's a New Kingdom-era shaft somewhere between the Sphinx and the river (if memory serves) that was found and excavated in the last ten years or so, turned out to be a shrine to Osiris, something like that. Has to be kept pumped out because of the water table. Campbell's tomb (shown on the line drawing up there) is a New Kingdom-era shaft up[ behind the Sphinx (w of the enclosure) and that doesn't "probably serve as light and air shaft to subterranean passages" as the caption says, it's been excavated (by someone named Campbell) right to the bottom, it contained a number of NK burials.
“My choice is lion for apparent reasons in construction of the body and paws.”
I agree and think you are right, An ungulate would never lay like that on it’s chest front legs stretched out forward. That is a predatory or guarding Cat and Dog profile. An ungulate would curl it’s legs under and lay on it’s side.
But the same concept was also applied to the premise that it might be a Bull. They propose it is even much older than assumed and once aligned with Taurus.
But my curiosity would be... While modern scientists are using Leo and Taurus as cosmology references, were the more modern Leo and Taurus even recognized constellations to the very ancient Egyptians?
Do we even know this for sure? What if to the very ancient Egyptians those particular Constellations were actually a Monkey and a Lizard instead, and there are no relations at all to the why they made the Sphinx as they did.
Meaning both applied assumptions above could be wrong and there might be some other influence involved for the Sphinx that needs to be explored... :)
Interesting!
