Grandma survived the 1918 flu. She celebrated 101 on Dec 15 :-)
Good for her! Happy belated birthday!
My mother wasn’t born in 1918 but her parents lost another daughter to complications of flu. My grandfather also had a brother, a healthy young man with a pregnant wife and young children, who died from the flu.
An older gentleman of my acquaintance, now deceased, told me once that his mother helped nurse flu victims in 1918; she never got sick. His father stayed at home to take care of the family and got extremely ill, though he survived.
As far as my great-grandmother who died from measles complications, I don’t know anything about her medical history. She had several children and it’s hard for me to imagine that she was never exposed to measles until then. It’s possible her health was poor.
Reading death certificates can be pretty interesting. It’s common to see heart attacks and strokes as causes of death so measles was quite a surprise.
Finally got my vaccination a couple months ago. Definitely relived as I dont think these measles outbreaks are going to stop.
I am interested in your rather unique claim that the PNW has more than the usual vaccination deniers. Seems like something from the deep south to me.
