Yeah, I get it. Of course, mobsters are not noted for their Rhode Scholar ways, of course, but the acting across the board was very good. But I certainly understand your point of view. I feel the same way about Good Fellas.
“Museum of Science and Trucking”
I don’t think most people got the hilarity of that. Every time I heard it I would ROFL!
If Season 8 of GoT is as bad as rushed and amateurish as Season 7 then it won’t be #1 in my opinion. Seasons 1-3: Great!
In art and the media, we have elevated criminals to status of hero to be envied and worshiped.
These characters should be reviled and yet they are praised and emulated.
I know, I know, 'it's just a tv program. Lighten' up. Have some fun. Enjoy it for what it is'.
I'm sorry but I can't.
I don't take any joy in watching heartless, soulless, moral-less reprobates glorified as role models.
You ask, 'what's wrong with society today?'
Take a look at The Sopranos and all the 'spin-offs'.
John Gotti and the fictional counterparts aren't heroes.
They're the lowest of the low who should be reviled.
I don’t think it was that great. I am still binge watching Mad Men which I think was much better.
I don’t know anyone who emulates Tony Soprano or Paulie Walnuts, lol!
Also, because crime drama is VERY dramatic in terms of conflict and fast action, which motivates all theater, it has a long history in film. Think of all the crime dramas of the late 20s and 30s with Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney. The French and the British also make good crime movies. I believe in Scarface (the Paul Muni version), they used real machine guns!
What has changed is the level of violence although anyone who has seen Public Enemy knows how violent Hollywood has always been.
Way too much Dany obsessing and Jon weeping
Its a top ranked mini series
But some would argue Game of Thrones is better or Breaking Bad
That show has great jokes. Last night, Tony in recalling the immortal words “Why can’t we all get along?” attributed them to The Rev. Rodney King, Jr. Also, when reading The Prince, he remarked that Prince Matchabelli was a great writer. Matchabelli made talcum powder and his commercials ran in NYC in the late 50s and early 60s.
Not weird; just different tastes.
What ever happened to that Russian lost in the Pine Barrens?
I quit Mad Men when they dumped trash everywhere after their picnic
A hipster PC look back on an era the writers knew nothing about personally
They were morally sound and respected. Think John Wayne archetype.
After the 60's we saw the rise of the 'anti-hero'. First they were human, morally flawed in some way. Then they became reprobates like mafia figures.
There was a big cultural/art shift that occurred.
Look at all the movies and reality shows that are now elevated to high art.
Breaking Bad. Walking Dead. Game of Thrones.
Does good win over evil anymore? Or does evil simply become more evil and all-encompassing?
That would be my opinion too
Gangsters as folk heroes is not new
Jon Snow is a hero and relatively pure
If youre looking for one that is
> The stupidity and brutality of most of the characters. <
Agreed. The Sopranos scripts were good, and so was the acting. But week after week, brutality won out. It was like watching a show about a successful Gestapo squad.
As you said, not my cup of tea.
My favorite: The Wire
Very good series through season 3, and then it ran on empty until the end. It almost descended into self parody. It’s not the greatest tv show of all time.
