When I was in the USN, we were flying our planes aboard after we had left Norfolk for a deployment to the Mediterranean, and me and a buddy had just tied a plane down that had landed and were opening some compartments (I think to get the gear lock devices maybe?) when a huge paper document, a manual of some kind 3 or 4 inches thick held together with three big silver rings simply plopped out of the compartment as we opened it and landed with a splat on the flight deck at out feet.
It broke apart, and before we could even inhale a breath, before our eyes the gusts of wind and jet exhaust and a nearby helicopter tore it to shreds, and the air was filled with a blizzard of 8x11 white snowflakes, sucked up into the rotor wash and spread all over the flight deck!
Hehehehe...we were just standing there, shocked and dumbfounded with our mouths open, it happened so fast. We tried grabbing them, clumsily clutching papers with our gloved hands from the non-skid deck, and a helmeted and goggled yellow shirt came up to us and yelled “The Air Boss wants to talk to you” and led us away like doomed prisoners!
We went up in the island, where a red faced officer demanded to know what happened. Apparently, in the rush to get the planes off at the land base for the rendezvous, various and sundry items like that manual had been tucked into the paneled compartments that things could be stored in wherever there was space, and that one had simply been shoved in and the panel shut with force.
The Air Boss wasn’t too hard on us, and no people hurt nor equipment damaged. I guess I saw clearly we were just two young airmen who had not seen that coming!
...hate when that happens...
“We’re off to see the wizard!”
I thought the title said “Dirt Devil” and was expecting some exciting footage with a vacuum cleaner. Disappointing to say the least.
Oh yea
True, but broken bones don't make the news. The last 2 I remember dying, one died from impact with the ground and the other missed the beach, landed in the water and drowned. Those were considered newsworthy.
