sorry, i my mssg above just a short while ago i meant 52.9esr, naturally, not 59esr.
but the issue remains: i install 52.9esr incl all addons and extensions, then block all possible updates with all there is, then use it a couple of times - and presto, it is back (?) to QUANTUM60esr.
there mus be a way, no?

Hmm, I am running 2 separate installations of Firefox (choose Custom when installing, and navigate to where you want it, or just change the name), and i am not getting the update after i followed the steps provided.
However, i see that you are not alone.
I must go now but see https://medium.com/@AntonioKowatsch/how-to-stop-firefox-from-automatically-updating-and-why-its-needed-5001a95a528e (radical) Or
In about:config check the settings for these prefs and reset by double clicking if any are true app.update.auto - false app.update.enabled - false app.update.silent - false
Or https://www.addictivetips.com/web/prevent-automatically-updating-to-firefox-57/
Turning off the Firefox automatic updates is all well and good. But what if it’s your main browser used to log into your most important online accounts? Wouldn’t the lack of future Firefox security updates be a concern?
I just opened up Chrome and now it looks totally different.
I would never and have never operated wanting or seeking to have lots of tabs opened simultaneously. Can’t imagine why I would either - to what end.
Why? When you are sometimes engaged in multiple forum threads then that can easily end up with a dozen on each one (thus you can quickly go back the page you are responding to. And if you are doing research for some of your debates then that can add more.
And if have pages you often look at, or intend to read and do not want them to disappear, then that adds more.
And that is just one browser. One another you may use mainly for paying bills, and maybe things like the quite changeable weather we often have.
On another you may use for online shopping for ministry activity (including bicycle parts), and sometimes for things neighbors asks you to find for them.
Most of these tabs can be quite readily identified and accessed. This all saves a lot of time and better helps make use of the same. Thanks be to God.
Then there are the multiple email addresses and Thunderbird downloading from each one.
If they ever enable multiple tab rows and changing the color of each tab, and changing the ctrl/tab switch toggle btwn the last opened tab, then it may begin to be an alternative to Firefox legacy.
“When you are sometimes engaged in multiple forum threads”
Never ever do that simultaneously. I may go from one forumn to another, and may go back to one again, but I never do simultaneously threads.
“And if you are doing research for some of your debates then that can add more. “
No. I do any research I want to do for a thread, and conclude or continue it with bookmarks for later and end my participation in that thread. When research pulls up a wrong or unsatisfactory link, I close it, I do not leave it open. I also get what I want from research, copy and save the URL and relavent data in a text or spreadsheet documents and close the tab.
“And if have pages you often look at, or intend to read and do not want them to disappear, then that adds more. “
No. Its called book marks, and by saving things/urls in bookmarks they are always there, without needing tabs left open and then those research links are in essence saved, for later occasions.
And no one said you should. Or should not.
No. Its called book marks,
And I have hundreds of bookmarked pages in categories, far far more than I remember, and thus certain one remain in tabs like a reading list. Quite a few Quora pages among others.
But when research pulls up a wrong or unsatisfactory link, I usually do remember to close it. But pages in bookmarks do always remain on the Internet.
In short, my system works quite well for the scope and depth I seek, and yours does not, but I did not say you or anyone must adopt mine. Thus rather than trying to correct and conform me to your system, may each one develop what is most practical for them., But may it be used for good to the glory of God in Christ.
You will need the original .xpi file used to install the extension. I keep all versions I've ever installed.
Change the file name from extension.xpi to extension.zip. Then unzip the file to its own directory. Once done, edit the "install.rdf" file. It is a text file. Look for fields that state:
<em:minVersion> 38.0</em:minVersion>
<em:maxVersion> 55.0a1</em:maxVersion>
Make sure your version number of FF falls between the two version levels.
Once changed, save the file, then zip up the contents of the directory, then change the extension install file name back to .xpi and re-install the extension.
Caveat, most times it works but sometimes the extension will exhibit funky behavior or not work at all. But it's worth a shot.
Bookmarks are srsly broken in Brave.
Do what? I have a toolbar of bookmarks to various places sitting in front of me.
The UI works differently than in say Firefox, yes. Best way I’ve found is to click the little “hanging flag” icon to the left of the URL, then drag your new bookmark where you want it.
Lots of user comments about this in Community. It ain’t just me.
I was aware of, and think I have done that once, but with Quantum it is not just the version that locks it out, but the very code itself, which is incompatible with it, which is basically a different browser it seems. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-add-technology-modernizing
