The new singles shot cost me $49. out of pocket at Walmart with insurance. They told me it would have cost $150. without insurance.

To keep from getting shingles I would be willing to pay much more as my mother had chronic shingles and suffered greatly.

I had the same soreness in the upper arm where I got the shot, the first dose, a week ago, but no other repercussions. I have seen shingles kill people . . . it is not just a rash; it wreaks havoc on all the body’s systems. For the elderly, it is particularly dangerous. Everyone, in my opinion, should get the new vaccination, which is made from a dead virus, not live; it can’t “give you” the shingles. But, it is considered to be 90% capable of protecting you from getting it.

I had my shingles shot almost 4 years ago. No problems. My neighbor and a close friend both had shingles near their ear. Both suffered serious hearing loss. Shingles gets in the nerves, kinda like Maxine Waters. You can suffer sight damage as a result...again like Mad Max. Scabs and pain are not the worst of it. Get the vaccine shot and hope for the best.

I’m curious, too.

My drs have recommended me getting it and about taht time, the new vaccine came out.

I am wondering how the new one, Shingrix I think it’s called, is working out for people.

Take the shots. Getting shingles is extremely painful and there is a possibility they can return.

I got the shot about 4 years ago. Had a very mild case of shingles 2 years ago. Red patch on skin, some burning, but it never developed into blisters. Mild case was chalked up to having had the vaccine.

I had the “new” shingles vaccination, which is actually two shots administered three to six months apart. I had the shot four months apart. After each shot, I experienced influenza-like symptoms that lasted about 36 hours: low grade temp, body chills, body aches, headache, etc. Better than shingles, however.

Some years ago, my Mother was having another outbreak of shingles. I didn’t know a thing about shingles, so researched it. From places like WebMD, naturopath groups, and Free Republic (!), this is what I found (keep in mind this was about 4 years ago on the Zostavax reference):

- Shingles is caused by the Herpes Zoster virus which is the same virus as Chicken Pox.

- Shingles around your eyes can blind you.

- There is a vaccine for shingles, called Zostavax. Ask your doctor about a shot. Vaccinated people can still get shingles, but they suffer far less pain and the bout is far shorter.

- A non-immune person can get Chicken Pox from you when you have a shingles outbreak.

DO THIS:

L-Lysine - clobbers the herpes zoster virus and props up the immune system.

Vitamin D3 boosts your immune system, wards off viruses.

When you have an outbreak, take 6000-8000 milligrams of L-Lysine a day. Also up your dose of Vitamin D to 4000 milligrams.

Once your outbreak is all cleared up, take 2000 milligrams of L-Lysine and Vitamin D as a maintenance dose each day.

I bought my Mother the two vitamins, and her shingles were completely gone in about two weeks. She did not have another outbreak before she passed, about 2 years later, where she had been having an outbreak every 6-9 months.

When, 2 months ago, my Daughter sent me a picture of a horrible outbreak and told me it was shingles, I sent her the same info as I’d provided my Mom. Daughter’s outbreak was healing in 3 days after she started the L-Lysine and went from not being able to wear clothing to healing well.

I know you could label this info as anecdotal, but you never know!

FWIW: There's a new pneumonia vaccine; new doc recommended it.

New pneumonia vaccine protects against over 70 strains of the disease

Got my first one in March. Arm was very sore for about a week. Was supposed to get the second one in May but they ran out! I’ve got until September to get the second one or I’ll have to redo it if they don’t get the vaccine in....

The original shingles vaccine did not produce any discomfort past the first day. Both my wife and I got that vaccine.

My wife has now gotten the new vaccine. First dose in June caused discomfort for about 36 hrs. Caused soreness in the arm and a slight malaise, but no noticeable fever. She received the second dose in late July. It caused serious aching in the arm. She couldn’t sleep that night. For a day and a half she ran a fever and had that beaten down feeling that a fever creates. There was a lingering ache in her arm also. After the middle of the 3rd day, the fever went away and the aching in the arm slowly subsided. On day 4 she felt pretty normal.

My almost 83-year-old mother just got the 2 part new shot. If she can deal with it all you folks can too:)

It’s 98% effective. You don’t want shingles.

If you get it on the face you can lose an eye. Get the shot.

Just got my first Shingrix this afternoon. Didn’t hurt. Now arm a little sore. The shot is given in the muscle instead of under the skin. That’s probably why you get sorer.
