The Charger R/T w/440 was undeniably quicker & faster. The stunt driver in the movie (also the actor for the mob man), Bill Hickman, had to restrain the Charger for the sake of the film.
The production team even undergripped & undersized tires on the Charger to attempt to even the score, but the Mustang still couldn’t keep up.
There has been article after article on this in many car mags. I am sure many more will come. Not to say the Mustang isn’t cool, but it didn’t perform as well as the Charger in any category. It’s sole claim to fame was that it was Steve’s chariot in the movie.

The charger is very cool and its fast but there is no way it would out perform a 390 4 speed mustang in the city street enviroment. Now out on the open road I think the charger would perform better.Hickman had to restrain the charger because it would have melted the tires off the car if he hadnt.Speed is great but you gotta have good brakes and the charger was weak in that respect from what I remember.Handling is a major concern as well and remember Hickman did sideswipe a parked car with the charger. And no I dont think that was in the script. The greatest car chase ever with gone in 60 seconds a real close second
