Self reparations? Can’t see the victim clearly.

Honestly, if this happens in front of me and I don’t respond appropriately, I hope I get shot. We all need to step up.

I think a loaded gun would have been the most effective way to intervene here. If you happened to in good shape and an experienced street fighter on hard pavement, that was your big chance to jump in. The average person would not be prepared to deal with that, unless only to distract from a safe distance. The best thing to do, may be to call the police, or if some space away in your car, toot your horn to attract more attention.

People who are not feral in NYC are unarmed. By law. The ferals exist under their own laws. I used to live there. I havent in over 50 years. I wouldnt.

I always carry a big can of bear spray which has about a 30 foot range. For just this type of situations. A gunshot would get you serious jail time.

"...clobbered by a stranger..."
No real upside for getting involved unless one knows completely what is happening.
Might be a turf fight between drug dealers for all a bystander knows.
For many with families, homes, careers, and assets...it is putting a lot at risk.

Why didnt the victim or any of the passersby on the street do a thing to help? OK, well say it. This is what happens to a disarmed populace. Really? The problem is people don't have guns?
Blame the guns, not the people.

Not in the jurisdiction where the article says this happened: Bronx, NY.
Besides, if one shoots a scruffy guy fighting a well-dressed man without knowing the WHOLE story, one could have just found themselves shooting an undercover police officer fighting with a wealthy drug kingpin resisting arrest. Just too much risk intervening in many situations, especially urban situations.
