I think he’s taking responsibility for the first bout of addiction, but saying that he did not know that the pain pills a doctor gave him in 2015 were opiates like heroin is and that he could become re-addicted.

Hard to believe he wouldn’t know that was a risk.

But also hard to believe a doctor doesn’t ask a patient, “Are you a recovering drug addict?” in which case, maybe we should stick to aspirin and sucrets, not Oxy.

I think I remember a thread awhile back with those insane numbers.

And some dentist I believe told him to take these, they would be fine.

Barbara Streisand. All clinicians who work in areas where opiates are regularly prescribed are hammered with regulations and continuing education requirements for opiate safety.

"they would be fine" sounds like when liberals talk about firearms.

Inject heroine into a non addictive personality for 30 days, and he would simply walk away and drink water afterwards.

Yes. Although personal responsibility is definitely a factor, doctor over-prescription plays a part.

I’m a bit sensitive to this because the same doctor that delivered me in 1954 was also responsible for my grandmother’s care in a nursing home (after a severe stroke). She was utterly lethargic and not really “there” when we would visit. This went on for a decade.

We eventually found out that he was terribly over-prescribing medication. Three things happened:
1. We got a different doctor who backed off her medications by a HUGE amount.
2. He lost the legal ability to prescribe drugs of any kind.
3. We got our grandmother back.

In many cases, it pays very well to prescribe drugs. That’s a problem.

It’s one of the reasons that at 64 I have no health care insurance. I’m self treating, self insured and trust the great healer.

[[And you keep trying to spread out the doses over the whole population. It isn’t spread out like that.]]

I realize that but the article was trying to make it seem like it was a huge amount by stating how many it would be ‘per person’- the truth is that breaking it down ‘per person’ shows that it’s only about 10 pills ‘per person’ per year- So if we’re talking about 1/3 of the population of that county- then it’s only about 30 pills ‘PER PATIENT’ per year- not even 1/2 a month’s worth (which would be about 70 or so- sometimes 120 depending on prescription)

Are they given all at once on average? Spread out over the year? - again- the numbers sound huge- but breaking down the math shows that it’s not all that large ‘per person’ (depending on how they are prescribed, ie- all at once? spread over the year?)-

I’m not suggesting there might not be a problem- however, the numbers look huge until it gets broken down

Hey! Leave my CPAP alone. I need it to sleep. And thanks for reminding me, my mask is currently soaking in the sink and I need to finish cleaning it. Oh what a pain.

Thanks. I’m guilty of the same thing I accuse others of: Determining someone has a whacky opinion based on just a couple of posts. :)

i.e. I’m sorry.

“Flea, the lead bassist...”

As opposed to the rhythm bassist?

I’m of an age that I remember when it was illegal for lawyers and pharmaceutical companies to advertise. Hard liquor and so-called “intimate” products too.

“Inject heroine into a non addictive personality for 30 days...”

Nonsense. Opiates are physically addictive, not just mentally addictive. Your body will become dependent on them no matter what your personality traits are, and you will suffer physical withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop getting them.

I would agree “D*d damn The Pusher” sentiment.

And I do feel sympathy for people who get hooked on these things, and also for their friends and family.

And I DO believe there should be avenues to get help.

But I abhor giving these addicts the victimhood status of someone who contracts a disease they didn’t ask for.

The majority of these cases of overdose and addiction are cases of people using the drugs recreationally, not people to whom they have been prescribed appropriately who need them for a real medical condition.

One has only to look at the media and see the pictures of these people who they report as overdosing on a daily basis. They are almost all people who are relatively young and otherwise healthy. And you aren’t getting hooked on one prescription with no refills (which is how it is normally done) that is written after knee or tooth surgery.

It isn’t to say there aren’t irresponsible physicians...there are. And they should be severely punished.

But over-prescribing these drugs is NOT the standard of care, far from it.

Thank you for saying that. I have a herniated lumbar disk and stenosis. I am on a low dose pain med, not opioids, and the med I am taking makes my day bearable. I was commiserating with a friend and said ‘I don’t think these are working, but I don’t want to go on anything stronger’. She told me that they were probably working, just not getting rid of all the pain. I think she’s right, as my days used to be pretty awful and now sometimes I even feel normal. But it’s a day to day thing.

...he has been around substance abuse since he was a child and had extensive experience with back-alley drug deals in the years before he got clean at age 30 in 1993.

Had he not abused drugs by CHOICE as a youth the chances that he would become hooked by drugs later PRESCRIBED to ease actual pain would have been much lower.

Watch Fox News lately (and probably every other news channel)? All you get is a CONSTANT stream of commercials INTENT on hooking every American on every possible drug.

And later in the evening you have the unending ads for lawyers stating that if you took the meds and have had any sort of problem since, call them and get big money!

There's a great movie called 'Suburbia', in which a pre-Chili Peppers 'Mike B. The Flea' has a part.

Anyway, when I broke my leg about a year ago, I freaked out the nurses by saying I didn't want anymore damn Percocet.

Same thing a few years earlier when, after several surgeries, I was hooked up to a morphine machine. Press a button, get morphine. Never used it.

Yes some doctors are to blame. Doctors over prescribing medication or prescribing to patients who do not need them is nothing new.
