Current distance estimate for that galaxy is between 67 mil (wikipedia) and 86 Mil LYs (sky safari).

As for being self-taught, about 100% of the folks in my astronomy club are self taught. Most professionals wouldn’t be bothering to look at such a mundane galaxy. It’s what we amateurs do all the time.

I thought Nova meant "no go" Amusing antidote as follows. In the late 60s Chevy marketed their immensely popular Chevy Nova in Venezuela. They had to change the name when they realized it meant "No GO" in Spanish.
