Roosevelt - dead man (not) walking at that point. Two months to go. At least he had the decency to replace an overt communist with a democrat party hack as VP before he died.
The rich irony of Soviet judges solemnly condemning Germans for invading and occupying Poland.
There was nothing decent about that man. He was most likely forced to dump Wallace.
FDR sold out to Stalin.
Old YAF song (Young Americans for Freedom), to teh tune of “America the Beautiful”:
O infamous for welfare state,
For fascist NRA,
You gave East Europe to the Reds
In Yalta one fine day.
O Roosevelt, oh Roosevelt,
God curse the likes of thee.
The bums you fed
Are glad you’re dead,
And so, by God, are we.
And the Communist ran against the hack (as a “Progressive”) in the subsequent election.
Soon-to-be U.S. President Harry Truman knew nothing about Nukes. He knew no more about what was going on with the war, than the general public.
Anna Roosevelt knew more than the VP.
In fairness to FDR, he only sold out to Stalin because Churchill tricked him into. Churchill screwed over the U.S. in a major way.
Thus validating the Stalin-Hitler Pact (the only treaty in their 70+ year history that the Soviets didn't violate -- and that's only because Hitler violated it first.)
No, FDR was eager to do so. He preferred Stalin to Churchill.
Actually Roosevelt had next to nothing with the decision to run Truman as VP in place of Wallace. In those days, the party big wigs selected the VP candidate, not the President.
They wanted Wallace out, Truman seemed to be the best bet to replace him. Truman told them what they could do with the VP nomination in no uncertain terms. On the last day of the Democratic Convention, they got Truman into the proverbial smoked filled room and laid out the facts of life to him. The told him that who ever was the VP would be the President within a year. They knew what Roosevelt’s health condition really was (as big a secret as Overlord or Manhattan Project). They told Truman, if he didn’t accept the VP nomination it would go to Wallace. Truman hated Wallace and said that he would accept the VP nomination.
Japan gave up because of the atomic bomb, right..?
They gave up because Stalin refused to mediate a surrender and instead entered the war against Japan.
The day of the Emperor’s radio broadcast was the day after Stalin attacked Japanese troops in Manchuria; Japan knew there would be no way communists would in peace permit the Emperor system to continue; the Imperial family would die, just as they had in Russia.
In all likelihood we’d today be dealing with a North Japan and South Japan, just as we see in Korea now.
At least before he end of his life, Wallace, realized the error of his ways, and became a strident anti-communist, he was just very naïve at that time.
Very true. But Tojo wanted to eliminate the Emperor himself, and keep the war going, and he almost pulled it off.
FDR should have never made an agreement to ally with Russia without them immediately declaring war on Japan. The War in the Pacific could have ended earlier.
No, you are projecting. FDR was totally fooled by Churchill since before the war started. Churchill conned FDR something good. Churchill got FDR to act in England’s interest, not in the U.S. interest.
Zhukov also kicked Japan’s ass in 1939, in a battle that was kept hush-hush at the time, so Japan knew what they were up against.
I don’t think I’m projecting. Many historians have said the same thing. FDR liked Stalin better than Churchill. He did what he intended to do.
If he was conned, it was by his own delegation, which was CRAWLING with Communists.
