All those states have millions of Republicans who are being hurt by this bill. “Tough” is what Democrats used to say to people who were already overtaxed and didn’t want to pay more. Now the Ryan-McConnell GOP answers the same way, like true big govt liberals

I am retired and my wife still works. We pull down about 70k.I did the math and we break even on the Senate bill and pay more taxes with the House bill. There is going to be shitload of pissed off Trump voters come next November. The ruling classes are either hopelessly out of touch or just plain lying scumbags.

It fixes a number of job killers and some will have lower taxes - the fact that so many have their own personal worries is one of the reasons they can get away with doing nothing and doing a half-assed job when they actually do something. Everyone say’s “What’s in it for me?” and gives them fodder for keeping a lot of the crap.

Nottom line, it’s a tax hike for millions of Americans - in the very economic class (upper middle) that voted for Trump

I guess we look at this differently. I look at the 90% that are better for the country (at least with Trump), and therefore support Republicans - you, I guess see a 10% flaw and that’s enough for Hillary.

Well, at least I know how we got Obama elected twice.

I’m middle class and either of the house or senate bills will reduce my taxes by around 22%.

You expected something different?

You live in a fantasy land.

Next you’ll say electing Democrats will make it better.

Doesn’t matter to me, I doubled my net worth under Obama. Worrying about which party is screwing me is a waste of time.

I’ve watched this stuff and worked through it for 40 years. Dems, Repubs, all the same.

NO ONE IS GOING TO SAVE YOU. YOU HAVE TO SAVE YOURSELF.

They are not just getting rid of SALT though. They are cutting the tax rates in the low and middle income brackets. They are doubling the standard deduction. When you add it together it’s a sizable tax cut, which is why the Dems are opposed to it. They are getting rid of SALT because it’s a subsidy of big government at the state and local level. It encourages high taxes at the state level. I was just watching Foxnews. They were talking about the NJ politicians potentially backing off a tax increase they had planned because of the GOP tax bill.

State and local governments charging over 12,000 to a middle class family for taxes should be fired, not encouraged. That’s outrageous. That’s a fifth of their income.

You’re darned right about Topeka and “doing with less,” but how is the left and the establishment supposed to pay off their “donors” and give their minority enough “walking around” money?

I mean, where are all those free tuitions and slop to the leftist academics going to come from, not to mention KNEA union brothers and sisters and all their minions sucking at the state teat?

We taxpayers simply cannot be shirkers when there are millions of Kansans left behind on their gravy trains.

...and also, I call this article BS, as far the tax plan hitting middle income Kansans. The VAST MAJORITY of Middle Class taxpayers DO NOT ITEMIZE now, and they get tax cuts. This is especially true in the non-coastal sections of the country.

Given that this guy is Dole Republican, I wouldn’t expect him to do anything but try to take down Trump...

Why should I be supplementing high tax states?

The Democrats are claiming the narrative and the Republicans had better wake up. They are convincing people who pay relatively small amounts in State and Local Taxes that this is the end of the world and they will secure their Votes come Election time..

I’ll bet a dollar to a donut that people think that if they lose a $1000 SALT Deduction on their 1040 they are paying a $1000 more in Taxes to the Federal Government, not the $150 that it will cost them if they are in a 15% Tax Bracket for instance.

Like everything else nowadays Perception trumps Reality every time it is tried which always benefits the Socialist Democrats.

The “fix” is easy, just eliminate the SALT Deduction on the two Highest Tax Brackets (the Evil Rich) and leave the lower Income Earners (the Working Class) Deductions alone.

The Evil Rich in the Blue States with the highest Tax Rates benefit the most from the SALT Deduction. Let them enjoy the Liberal Utopias they helped create using their Money to support the Socialist Democrat Party..

I live in CA where they just added a $.12 per Gallon Gas Tax and not a whimper from the lower income People most affected by it. If the Republicans were in power and did such a thing, the Socialist Democrats would make sure it was a big issue to the poor Working Families.

It would be a daily Headline with tear jerking stories of the poor schmuck filling up his old beater Car to get to his three Jobs.

That is on top of the stealth Carbon Tax that was added by Governor Mooonbeam and the Mexican Cartel Legislature in Sacramento a couple of years ago. The Drones just pay...

I have given up the idea of a return to a Constitutionally Limited Government coming from our Elected Representatives. It isn’t even talked about. The mantra is how do you pay for Tax Rate Cuts, not living within you means.

That shows that the more people realize what it is in them, the more they realize how awful they truly are.

No. It doesn't. It shows that very few know anything about it other than what the liberal media has told them.

I concur. Left out of the entire debate is the cuts to .gov. Debt will never be taken care of.

Ya just need to take care of yourself and family at the end of the day. .Gov only takes care of the well connected and the correct R and D tribal members and contributors.

“I have given up the idea of a return to a Constitutionally Limited Government coming from our Elected Representatives. It isn’t even talked about. The mantra is how do you pay for Tax Rate Cuts, not living within you means.”

Correct. Very few in Washington have any interest in limited government, and those few have little power.

I’m constantly surprised at conservatives demanding the government save them. It’s not going to happen. Just like an animal in the wild, you have to assess the situation and react in the best way for yourself.

Nature doesn’t care if you live or die, and government doesn’t care if you are relatively rich or relatively poor. Economically you are on your own and always have been.

I think it is kind of funny to have Steve Rose start touting Bob Dole.

Steve is about as liberal a Republican as you can find and that was not “Bob Dole.”

Lies?

“The bill actually helps big business.
Yes, the proposed tax bill helps corporations, but not your type of corporation. One of the centerpieces of the tax plan is a corporate tax cut from 35 percent to 20 percent. Who doesn’t like a big fat tax cut like that? Sign me up.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get that.

Let’s get geeky for a sec: Most small businesses are run either as sole proprietorships (boo hiss, but that’s a column for another day), partnerships (ditto), S corporations (that’s me, and probably you, too), or Limited Liability Companies (LLCs.) Big corporations—the Amazons and Exxons of the world—are legally organized as C corporations.

And who gets this tasty tax cut? Yep, C corps. Big companies with lots of shareholders. That’s your business, right? Exactly. I haven’t known even one small business that is run as a C corp.

Oh, the bill also cuts taxes for multinational corporations on overseas earnings from 35 percent to 10 percent. I bet that describes your business for sure, right?

Maybe this helps: There is a small middle-class tax break, mostly coming from a doubling of the standard deduction. That assists you, right? Err, probably not. Many small business people itemize deductions instead of using the standard deduction. Drat! We almost had a winner.

Maybe there is a glimmer of hope here: One provision of the bill reduces the pass-through tax rate from 39.6 to 25 percent for some small-business owners. Which ones? Ah, there’s the rub. Under the proposal, many small-business owners are assumed to be exempt from the new, lower pass-through rate — people like lawyers, doctors, financial professionals, etc. Other small businesses can claim only 30 percent of their income under the new, lowers rate”
