I Love Lucy was one of the first shows to pioneer taping the show for rerun and syndication. The idea of reruns was so novel The studio wasnt interested in it an turned it over to DesiLu Productions making DesiLu Productions tons of money.
One little known fact.......when the series ended, Desi Arnaz, who considered himself a good businessman, sold back the entire series to its broadcaster, CBS.
The Arnaz’s got a goodly sum.... about four million dollars for the series.....but if they had only known about reruns.
CBS has made a ton of money on the reruns.....and has sold individual packages of the programs for about 95 dollars each....a huge money-maker.
It’s been rumored that years later, Arnaz was still kicking himself for that deal.
Truth is Desi was a rabid womanizer....
he chased and bedded down anything in skirts.
In her autobio, Barbara Eden---played the sexy blonde cousin in the country club episode---said she spent the entire time hiding from Desi. He chased after her something fierce. But Barbara was having no part of it.
Apparently word got back to Lucy---and she invited Barbara into her dressing room to do a dress makeover b/c Lucy wanted Barbara to star in her little segment.
This was very unusual b/c Lucy was the star and no other character was allowed to outdress her.
Ethel complained she was always in house dresses while Lucy dripped w/ furs, jewelry and gorgeous hats and dresses.
TIDBIT: In the “Ethel’s Hometown” episode....... Lucille Ball had just started out in Hollyood and got a bit part in a movie w/ Chick Chandler, the guy playing the reporter.
Lucille Ball liked to hire her old time movie pals for bit parts in the series.
