How was anybody able to make these determinations without an autopsy? In order to determine the cause of death, an autopsy is necessary. His parents prevented an autopsy so everything else is a guess. You can do nothing more than guess. An autopsy would have revealed the real cause of death and, even more, what had happened to their son.

Yeah, the parent’s clamoring to find out what happened
comes out ingenuous when they won’t allow an autopsy.

The family would not allow a full autopsy.

I did not know that. Thanks.

Thanks for that link - I had never read about Jack Downey and Richard Fecteau before.

There is the possibility that Otto arrived home in such terrible condition (blind, deaf, coma like state, etc) from the torture and abuse he suffered in NK that the family decided to allow him to be sedated with morphine (which suppresses respiration) until he expired. The father mentioned that Otto was writhing when they first saw him, so that would be a reason to initially administer morphine.

You’re very welcome.

It’s amazing that Jack came home after two long decades, resumed his life without PTSD and lived a fruitful life.

His captors didn’t break him in spite of horrific tortures..
“I really found the most pernicious thing in prison was feeling sorry for yourself.”

I’m glad his mother saw his release; in spite of her stroke. She never broke her faith...I think she attended Mass every day; she taught in the school across the street from Church.

You know, when you’re a kid, [especially in the 50s] you were greatly influenced by the adults in your life. Mrs. Downey, our pastor leading prayers for Jack on Sunday, and shoe boxes with combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste and penny candy. And learning to hate and fear communism.

Sorry for the rambling...but it was big deal in our puny little lives. I can only imagine what Otto and his family experienced.
