I served aboard the Bennington CVS-20 from 1968-1970. I went aboard the Yorktown CVS-10 in Long Beach Cal. I also toured the Enterprise at Pensacola Fla.

It's strange how attached you get to a ship after serving aboard it for so long.

In the early sixties, I collected money for the preservation of the USS Alabama and the USS Drum as museums.

Amazing job, sir. I hate to be a nitpicker, but neither Enterprise nor Hornet were attacked at Midway.

Enterprise is one of my two favorite ships from World War II (the other being the Japanese battleship Haruna). I think it's an absolute travesty that she wasn't preserved as a museum ship. If someone ever builds a replica of her, I will certainly pay her a visit.

How would you rank the difficulty of building the Merit International kit? I used to build models when I was a teenager, but they were the Revell kits that you could slap together in a couple of hours. In modern times, I've only done the Fujimi 1/350 Haruna and the Academy 1/400 Titanic. The Haruna took me maybe 100 hours and was rather challenging for me, and that's even though I decided I wasn't skilled enough to paint her. I would love to have the 1/350 Enterprise to keep an eye on her, but I'm not sure I'm up to another build of that magnitude.

That is a Gleaves class, the USS Grayson, DD-435. She too was on the Doolittle Raid, and also survived the war.

Thanks for your service to tis Republic. The Essex class rebuilds were pretty phenomenal ships in their own right and were the backbone of the carrier force until the Forrestal Class, and then the Kitty Hawk Class and finally the Nimitz class came along.

It was a lot of fun...but took a lot of time to do right. Particularly if you want to detail it out with the photo etch metal parts...the railing, sensors, etc. Then the aircraft builds.

Doing all of the small .50 caliber machine guns and putting the armor plate protection on each was pretty tedious and time consuming.

But I enjoy it. I probably have 200-300 hours in that kit. I had about 1000 hours in my:

USS Ronald Reagan

...and

USS IWo Jima, LHD-7

Both of which have fully lit hanger decks.

Yes she is a legend. just wish they had preserved her.

I wish even now that Congress would act on her and work with one of the big shipbuilders, like Ingalls, to provide funds to build her.

Just build the hull so she could sit at pier...no internal machinery spaces, but finish out the hanger deck, the flight deck and the island...and then make a National Museum ship out of her.

I would pay to go and urge everyone I know to go see her.

Amazing.

I worked on the Intrepid design when it was being turned into a museum, saw it heading up the Hudson one Sunday on its way to its current and final berth.

Very true JH. There was an ad back in the day that said, “Join the navy. It's not a job it's an adventure.” That is so true.

The “Benny” took me around the world and brought me back. We were the first carrier to make a west-pac without losing a single man or plane. We received the meritorious unit commendation in 1968.

I went to places I would never have seen otherwise.

I love the '30s and 40's tin cans, especially when they still have their full gun and torpedo installations.
