“TWO young Australian backpackers have told their horror account of being kidnapped, assaulted and robbed at gunpoint while travelling through Guatemala.”
What did they *think* was going to happen?
Dumb asses.
There are two rules for travel in small groups south of the U.S. Border.
Rule #1 : Don't.
Rule #2 : if you have more time and money than good sense, Don't trevel with ALL OF YOUR FUNDS. MAKE ARRANGEMENTS WITH BANKS ALONG THE ROUTE TO COLLECT FUNDS AS NEEDED; AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMEONE IN A SAFE PLACE TO REPORT IN WITH PROGRESS REPORTS OVER THE INTERNET.
ON TOP OF ALL THAT, MAKE A LIST OF ALL CONSULATES FOR YOUR HOME COUNTRY ALONG THE ROUTE (in case you survive.)
I wonder if they STILL support gun control as strongly as they did before going to Central America...considering that Central America has stronger gun control than even Australia.
(trust me, it’s a safe assumption that they support their country’s horrific gun control laws)
Nice tattoos. *eyeroll*
Heh! Me, too!!
Well said!
When traveling I tended to avoid Aussies and Americans. If you are traveling and an Israeli party is going in the same general direction as you are, stick with them.
The thing about third world countries is once they find out your a liberal they treat you like a friend and invite you to their homes for dinner. Also, the tooth fairy is real.
Looks like dirt.
Are you kidding? They had the best Third World backpacking adventure ever!
They got kidnapped, tied up and robbed by local bandits and lived to tell about it. She didn't even get raped!
They'll be regaling tales of their Guatemalan horror until their final days, to anyone who will listen.
"Grandpa's drunk again and telling us about the bandits in Guatemala."
"Not again!!! I've heard this story a thousand times!"
She has a knock out body...he, OTH is uglier than a pug pooping peach pit...
Well, that was unfair.
The picture you posted made him look butt ugly.
When I went to the article turned out he wasn’t bad looking.(not gay)...LOL
At least about 40 years ago we were having to entertain a World Health Officer from Egypt and his wife because my husband’s boss had been called out of town overnight. The W.H.O officer told of a group of U.S. hippies who were touring around the middle east somewhere, and came across a pool, very isolated, and they all stripped naked and were cavorting and carousing in this pool, when a bunch of offended natives rode down and slaughtered all of the group. He said there were ten or more Americans who were butchered, and W.H.O had to gather the pieces and contact the next of kin.
So she's a butterface.
(But her face...)
Isn’t it kind of retarded for Australians to go roughing it in Central America? Australia has plenty of “outdoors” to discover, with plenty of nasty critters to menace you. There is no need to be a fool and travel across to the ocean for the same experience.
My brother's been everywhere and he tells me Aussies and Canadians rough it everywhere. They even go places the natives don't.
He's from San Pedro.....Every time we've vacationed there, we would stay the first night or two at a hotel there then hook up with all his family and head out to a small resort along the coast in Tela.......
Back in the 90's he bought a sizable piece of ocean front property along the coast outside of Trujillo in the hopes of building a vacation home and that the area would be developed like various resorts in Mexico but it never happened.
Over the years he and the other investors have had major problems with squatters coming in and trying to take over. At one point they hired security guards to try and keep the "natives" out of there. I don't know how successful it was or even if he still has the property.
But you're right, Honduras has become extremely dangerous. About 6 or 7 years ago one of his niece's son who lived in San Pedro disappeared along with his two best friends never to be seen again. My BIL suspects they were involved with drugs and one of the cartels got them..........
As a side note, on my last trip there back around 2004 or 2005 while we were at the hotel in San Pedro, we heard gun shots. Turns out that 2 blocks away gunmen stormed a bus and killed almost all the passengers.......yikes!
“Guatemala (aka Guatapeor)”
I remember that joke, in the context of entering Mexico across its southern border and saying you were going from Guatemala to Guatapeor.
Thanks for the info.
Too bad about the three never being seen again. I think I remember something about all the people on the bus being killed. Yep, best to stay away from that place and the surrounding countries.
I will never go back to Mexico for numerous reasons.
