“Why are they closing? This author seems to have left that out.”
This is democrat-run Chicago. Businesses aren’t supposed to make money, they’re supposed to cater to the community.

And if the dumb city had not given tax breaks to CVS, Mom and Pop might still be open.

As far as I know, Alderman Jason Ervin is free to put up the capital and take the risk and open a pharmacy in his own district. Right?

“Ultimately they are going to demand Tax-Payer supported government-run stores in The Hood.”
“Store” to me, implies a place where currency is exchanged for goods. What they are demanding is more along the lines if a distribution center..

whatever...if you have to bribe someone to open a business or keep one open, there may be something amiss. I saw TV commercials here in Va. advertising for businesses to move to NY and offering a tax break. What they don’t mention is when those breaks expire you’re screwed as a business...you’re going to have to pack up and leave anyway! Stupid people who fall for that aren’t going to be in business for long anyway.

Ervin said Chicago gave the drugstore $1 million in tax breaksProbably CVS lost more than that amount in shoplifting and robberies.

I have seen those ads. I have read articles claiming Cuomo made it known those ads were to advance his political career than actually entice any business to relocate to NY.

The ads made me laugh out loud! The same people moving down here aren’t smart enough to know their ideas are stupid.

According to this
neighborhood discussion forum, CVS was already failing in 2014. Apparently, the economic development strategy was to bring in businesses with a more upscale clientele, hoping that that upscale folks would move into da hood. One local said a Dollar Store would have been more useful.

Ervin said Chicago gave the drugstore $1 million in tax breaks to open at the East Garfield Park location about five years ago.Do the math.
If AFTER $1 million in tax breaks, the company is losing money at the store, they'd be losing even more money BEFORE the tax breaks.
If the company were making money at the store, they'd keep it open.
Of course politicians, especially liberal politicians, that caters to a low educated demographic, can't understand this.
