Chicago was fourth for 2016 which would have given us a huge home field advantage in the shooting sports and set a record in false starts in the track events.
I see that Los Angeles and Paris made the final cut to host the 2024 Olympics after Budapest dropped out. Most cities around the world have lost interest in hosting future Olympics because it is such a bad investment and a drain on their treasuries.
This should prove interesting, if L.A. gets the nod, since they have been broke, broke for years. Disaster waiting to happen to an already disastrous city.
Olympic venues, both winter & summer, will probably go the way of World Fairs. No one wants to sponsor them because of the cost ... the prestige factor only goes so far. Where the Olympics are concerned, especially the Winter
Games/events, they need to recycle old venues, like Lake Placid,NY, Squaw Valley, CA or Whistler in BC Canada. In some cases they have and it keeps cost in check.
I haven't much about how Atlanta fared, but they had facilities and would have used most anything they built for the Olympics. Not sure if beach volleyball was a sport then.
And I haven't heard any horror stories about London. I think most large cities in western nations probably have most of what's needed to host the Olympics without any really major building projects.
LA and California in general have mounting budget problems and maybe they should stay away from it for now. LA's changed a lot since 1984, but I think there are still a good number of cities in the US and Europe that already have most of what it takes to host the Olympics. It's cities in developing nations that undertake major construction that usually end up with huge losses.
