I think Russia is a country on the right track.

That's literally wrong.

Russian GDP growth (annual)

2010: 4.504%
2011: 4.264%
2012: 3.518%
2013: 1.279%
2014: 0.716%
2015: -3.727%

It's not just trending downwards, it's a country in free fall.

And that's why we should fear them?

GDP declined in 2014 and 2015 because Obama had KSA kill the price of oil to destroy Russia. Current IMF GDP projections show 1.1 growth this year.

No, I implied that Reagan would spin in his grave if he New that conservatives were romanticizing life in Russia. I said nothing about the Russian people. You are putting words in my mouth and calling me names because your argument is weak.

I have nothing against Russia itself, but Putin is not our friend. I don’t believe that Russia “hacked” our election and I believe that the leftist who currently sits in the White House did what he did out of political spite. That said, the idea that things would be better for us if we were more like Russia is ridiculous.

I studied Russia at the Hoover Institution which is one of the premier conservative think tanks studying the Soviet Union and Russia in the aftermath of the Soviet collapse. I know what I’m talking about. You sir, do not.

A lot of that decline is from the price of crude oil.

So he can declare Marshall law and stay in office, thus depriving Trump of his lawfully won election?
But Putin won’t take the bait, he’d much rather work with Trump.

“How much of that is because of Obama’s economic warfare/sanctions against Russia? A lot, I would wager.”

The Russian economy was a basket case long before Obama and long before the well deserved sanctions played on Russia.

Which actually strengthens his point. Russia does not have a diverse economy. The vast majority of its income is derived from oil which is a remarkably volatile commodity. During the same period the US also had some issues as a result of the growth of the energy sector but our GDP did not shrink at all because our economy is so varied.

Who is Marshall and why is going to make all the laws?

Returned from Russia not too long ago and Alter Kaker, you are right.

But I agree with rb that a balanced view from America’s geopolitical/strategic perspective is necessary.

I think Trump has struck the right balance in his cabinet. Engaging with Russia on the foreign policy front, especially with regard to protecting our interest — does not equate to praising the Russian government and its treatment of its own citizens...

I am not saying I think Trump is an expert, but he has surrounded himself with solid people who I don’t think will either kow-tow to Putin nor revive/adopt rather juvenile, warmongery Cold War-era rhetoric as Senator McCain has.

The domestic changes necessary in Russia will depend largely upon the Russian people — and quite frankly, on OUR own capacity to model a free and just society inspired by Judeo-Christian principles.

As I’ve said elsewhere on the forum, I can imagine a typical young Russian’s response to Trump’s election being the following:

“Yay! Trump won!”

(a bit later)

“Wait? Why don’t we get to have elections like that?”

>Their GDP is less than that of the State of California.”

>How much of that is because of Obama’s economic warfare/sanctions against Russia? A lot, I would wager

Not too much actually. Russia’s always been a poor country and it’s biggest decline happened in the 90s when Clinton connected Oligarchs looted the entire country blind. A lot of the people later killed by Putin where former Oligarchs who’d fled the country after having their assets seized by the Russian government.

Russia doesn’t have the quality of people required to be a real first world nation and the country is too big to build first class infrastructure on a large scale. However it’s a nation that’s willing to spend a lot more on defense (30% of GDP has been very common in their history) and will continue to be more powerful in war than their economy indicates. However, the quality of the people in the west is in sharp decline as well. Bringing in massive numbers of 3ed worlds may soon render us as poverty stricken as Russia.

Putin is a thug.

But the Russian people are white, Christian, and heterosexual. They are our natural allies against the 3rd worlders.

Russia, believe it or not, is more corrupt than the United States. Our journalists merely lie. Theirs get assassinated if they don’t.

Because countries in free fall are unpredictable and dangerous. Putin has nothing to lose - he needs to change the status quo quickly or the wheels are going to come off the wagon and he knows it.

demonizing modern day Russia serves no good purpose , a renewed Cold War accomplishes nothing .
I am the son of a former SAC Col and I grew up on SAC bases . I know about the crews that never came home . We need NOT go there again .
Better to invite them as allies , not adversaries . Russia , and Putin , are not lost causes . Given the chance , I think he would be happy to work with an intelligently managed & governed USA . Not the type of idiocracy that they have been faced with these last 8 years .
America and Americans should NEVER elect such retards again . Whatever it takes to prevent them from office , it’s worth it .

This is true because Russia embraced “free trade” and quickly discovered the wonders of DE-indrustilization. All they could is trade oil and gas because their industry was destroyed in the 90s. The sanctions have actually been a benefit to Russia as it’s forced them to grown their own industries again and I rather doubt Putin wants the sanctions to go away. It gives him the perfect excuse to fix the diversity of the Russian economy.
