Processed junk like that Hormel stuff can lead to expensive medical bills.
I got two packs of turkey necks at less than $3 a piece. A package of celery, one of carrots plus onions and garlic I already had on hand. Put it all in the crock pot and I have bone broth and turkey salad for at least a couple of days.
A dozen store brand eggs, a $1 package of frozen spinach, a handful of grated cheese, some whole milk or 1/2+1/2, a little onion and garlic baked in a greased pie pan and I have a meal that beats anything you can buy in a restaurant. This freezes extremely well, too!
Actor Fred MacMurray brought a bologna sandwich to the set every day. He was quite well-off when he died.

The difference is the clientele; in my area many bars were suffering (and many closed), and those that remain cater to the 20- and 30- somethings that are working while not encumbered by families/mortgages. It is a temporary respite for those industries relying on peoples’ discretionary dollars; when this wave dies off the people that are replacing them (foreigners) have very different habits.
Unfortunately the diners in my area have been converted to restaurants (they are still called “diners” but are restaurants - and not cheap!). They even have liquor licenses now; nothing like the cheap diners from a dozen years ago...
