1966 Pontiac GTO, 389, 3 deuces, Hurst 4 speed shifter. I had 45 days of bliss with that ride until dear old Dad convinced me college was more important.

Best classic/muscle car I haven’t driven: 1968 high performance Mustang driven by Steve McQueen in Bullitt.

Next best classic/muscle car I haven’t driven: 1970 Dodge Challenger driven by Barry Newman in Vanishing Point.

Best classic/muscle car I’ve driven: 1966 Corvette.

There fixed it. Thanks for the heads up.

Buddy of mine was a sales manager at a Porsche/Audi dealership. I had bought a 914 when they first came out as well as an Audi later. He had a guy that traded for a new 911S every year after putting 50k on it each each as a medical apparatus salesman.

He wanted me to buy the trade-in but since the guy traveled the northern tier states, he had no A/C on the car and after driving it for an afternoon, quite without reserve or prudence in how I ran it, I regretfully took it back and said not to write it up. I have regretted the decision since but it gets up to a hundred in Kansas and Missouri where I lived.

Steady as a rail, I went around an interstate ramp at 95 mph in the top end of third and knew I had 2 more gears left as I entered the highway -— wow.

I’m a girl, but I always liked my friend’s 442 the best. I think it was a 1968

The other car that was very good was a 1973? Torino

My uncle bought a fully restored 55 T-Bird back in the 70s and let me drive it occasionally.

More recently I drove a completely restored 65 Mustang and it made me realize how far we have come with creature comforts in modern autos.

I’ve owned several early Mustangs including one I used to race in SCCA road races back in the day. Very cool for their time.

I had one of those in the early 1970s. A 1957 Chevy 2-door coupe with no post between the side windows. Mine was green with a white top, in perfect shape like that with low mileage. Unfortunately, had to sell it to pay for dental work I immediately needed. I had tricked it out with a 327ci with headers out the fenders and glass pipes under the doors, 411 posi rear, Muncie 4spd trans, raised it with hydraulic shocks in the rear with large balloon tires on chrome rims. Been kicking myself ever since letting it go.

A good friend’s 1967 Camaro 396 ss 4 speed stick shift was about it.

I never was that big on haulin’ butt.

My wife had a SAAB SPG 9000 Turbo once upon a time. Nice, but that wasn’t in the class of “Muscle car”. It just hauled, and was fun. Turned heads.

My dad had at 1990 911 Carrera 4, and I drove it from L.A. to Seattle for him. The high speed stability was questionable, at best. Especially if there's even a little crosswind. Got it around 125 in southern Oregon and it almost blew off the road.

Interesting thing I've noticed about 911's is that the ones with spoilers (either duck tails or whale tails) handle slightly better in the esses, but aren't as stable in the straights. I actually prefer both the looks and the (overall) ride of the tail-less (air-cooled) 911's. ....especially the '70 - '73 vintage.

When 911's are right, they are SO right.
