The cat was lost, was chipped and it was a purebred. Decent people search for the owners by putting up posters or inquiring of the neighbor who told them the cat’s name. I don’t believe for one moment they didn’t know the cat was owned by a neighbor. I had this happen to me during a snowstorm, took in a beautiful cat who was snowed in with us for four days. After that, I put up posters and diligently searched for the owner, who came and picked up the cat.
They probably felt the owners didn't want it.
Property law isn't about feelings. If you find a neglected child, you can't just adopt him or her -- that's the law. Same with someone else's purebred, chipped pet. It could have jumped out the window of a moving car and had a few rough days; meantime, the owners are frantic. There are many online sites and rescue orgs that post information about lost pets. Feelings are not a reasonable excuse for cat kidnapping.
