My father (whose parents came to the U.S. from Sicily) made it to Italy during January 1944. He took the scenic route from Anzio to Rome, then met a 17-year-old girl who he asked out to a dance (chaperoned by her mother). He then visited Germany, got wounded, and then came back in late 1945 and married the girl. The rest is history. :-)

I’ve been there 5 times. Once to study law for a month, in 1995.

Great story, Larry....I am reading Norman Davies’ new book, Tail of Hope, in preparation for my trip. It looks like many of the Poles who survived Stalin’s Gulags and fought their way up the east coast of the peninsula had similar experiences to your father’s....Lots of good history there!
