“So all pets are in prison. Keeping a pet by your definition is cruel. They are animals. Their life in captivity is far better than in the wild.”

Pets have been domesticated for thousands of years and enjoy being our companions if we give them good conditions. The intelligent ones will stay with you even if you put no walls around them.

Imprisoning wild animals in a tiny cage where they can’t even run is very very different. The animals obviously look depressed and dead when compared to their wild relatives.

And yes, I think the domestication process is very cruel and I don’t think it should be done on any more animals purely for our entertainment. In theory, you can create domesticated lions and whales but why make animals suffer for our entertainment?

So, let me understand this business model.

“Our attendance is down, what should we do?”

“Let’s get rid of the main thing people come to see.”

Do I have that right?

So which one is it? You are arguing both sides of the issue.

And, of course, should we eat animals?

You do realize, certain animals will never be left alone in the wild as long as there is greed. Rhinos, Elephants and other very rare species will disappear without human help. As long as the animals are well cared for, I support keeping a safeguarded population, rather than having to see them in photos or in video.

We’d still go if they didn’t have a killer whale show — I like their dolphin show better anyhow. I know the killer whales are the big draw, but I hope this doesn’t finish off Sea World.

The irony, of course, is that Sea World does a ton of excellent conservation work, while the idiots protesting them are NOT acting in the best interests of orcas. You can’t just release an orca into the wild and expect it to have a happy life — no one yet has figured out how to release an orca into the wild and have it even live for very long, let alone thrive.

But the idiot protesters are convinced Sea World is all evil, all the time for refusing to do something that will most likely doom the orcas. Sea World hasn’t been involved in capturing orcas in decades; in that sense they’re on the same page as the protesters. Where they differ is that Sea World recognizes their responsibility to the critters who’ve been hanging out with humans for decades and don’t have a wild life to return to, while the protesters just want to fling the whales out and pretend it all never happened.

I’m OK with keeping already domesticated animals and eating their products as long as they don’t suffer. The suffering their wild ancestors endured has already been done and cannot be erased. It took an untold amount of forced breeding and culling to create the domestic animals we have today.

I’m even OK with domesticating new animals for doing WORK when existing domesticated animals cannot do the job. i.e. bomb sniffing, search/rescue, etc

*BUT* I don’t agree with making generations of new animals suffer so their lives can be used purely as entertainment. It’s unnecessary and we have enough entertainment on this planet without making living things suffer...

Animals in the wild kill each other and get eaten by other animals. Is that better than a life in a zoo?

My dog would not survive 4 days in the wild.

Do you eat animals?

There is a theory that dogs domesticated humans. The 'weak' wolves discovered that humans would feed them and care for them if they showed affection. They became dogs.

Not an “animal rights” fanatic; but it would be OK with me for animals to be left alone in the wild, the environment where they belong. Have visited zoos all my life; but seeing big cats caged & becoming mentally unbalanced by the confinement is sad to me.

You just described "marriage" for millions of men.

Not me, though (my wife knows when I post...lol).

“Animals in the wild kill each other and get eaten by other animals. Is that better than a life in a zoo?”

I think being locked alone in a small cage would outweigh any other possible advantages and the animals show it. Even humans would find more joy living in a war zone than a guaranteed life of “comfort” in a cage.

The only zoo I approve of is Monkey Jungle. They get the advantage of extra food and no predators. BUT they are given a natural habitat and socialize like they do in the wild.

I eat domestic animals sometimes but am trying to transition to only home-grown milk and eggs. I don’t believe 100% vegan is healthy but we can get the nutrients we need without making any more animals suffer.

We only went to Sea World ONLY because of the killer whales. The word killer’ was nothing to us violence disensitized kids back then.

I rooted for the orcas...

Agreed. SeaWorld doesn’t treat its animal trainers very well either (see “Beneath the Surface” by John Hargrove), but at least the humans can choose to leave.

And this is why millions of humans are fleeing the war zone in Iraq and Syria. You are delusional. Deal with reality.

“And this is why millions of humans are fleeing the war zone in Iraq and Syria. You are delusional. Deal with reality.”

That makes no sense. They are running to other countries without war.

You think a single one of those people would choose to live a lifetime isolated in a comfortable cage instead?

Yes. We women have to be ever vigilant & watchful to
see that our men are well attended to in their
“cages” (houses). Heh. Also, we have to throw them
a whole beef roast occasionally lest they become
effeminate. :o)

About the worst I’ve ever felt for an animal was for a
circus elephant who died a long time ago. Circus had set
up in a small town in our state many, many years ago.
Of course, the elephants had to work very hard helping
in set-up. Then the circus paraded down the main street.
It was very hot that day. - One of the elephants spotted
a sliced watermelon on a table on the sidewalk. It just
went berserk, was so thirsty, hot & probably hungry.
It (accidentally I would guess) trampled a man on the
street. - Well, it was tried, convicted, and a special
hanging apparatus was constructed in order to “execute”
it for its “crime”. . and, so, it was hanged and killed.
- I probably should not tell that story; but I hope &
pray it is in a better place than this realm now. I
love elephants. Animals are generally better than a lot
of humans I’ve seen. :o(

No. I am saying give the cats a decent bit of space with
natural as possible surroundings & don’t put them in a
tiny concrete & iron bar cage 24/7. It is pitiful to see
big cats doing repetitious running & rolling behavior that
resembles a circus act over & over & over just because they
are so confined & not allowed even enough space to cuss a
housecat. (The cats I saw had not been in a circus act.
They were exhibiting manic-depressive, futile, despondent
behavior.) Nashville Zoo has a good habitat for its big
cats; uncaged and in nature so they can be more normal.

BTW, you're only a book and two verses off from my favorite passage: 1 John 3:18.
