In the last New Hampshire poll 38% of liberals supported Trump. She may be on to something here.

I agree. It's no secret that a much of Trump's support comes from liberals and those all-important independents that Romney worked so hard to attract.

It's not "scary," though. Of course those liberals who support Trump will naturally seek a liberal candidate. An earlier article quoted a New Yorker who spoke to liberal friends who support Trump. They were convinced Trump had changed his positions for the election only and actually still held the liberal POV.

So if Cruz were to start attracting liberal voters, we should just shoo them away and lose their votes. Such a ‘winning’ genereal-election strategy.

No, it's not that Bernie's people will support Trump.

Bernie's hard-left voters -- community activists, college students and professors, public sector union leaders -- aren't going to go to Donald. Conversely, rank and file Teamsters tempted by Trump would be more likely to vote for Hillary than for Bernie.

Rather it's that both Donald and Bernie compete for a segment of the population that could go to either of them -- alienated, apolitical voters who are fed up with politics as usual but don't have strong ideological commitments.

Not many in that group would see Ted Cruz as a second, third, or fourth choice. The things Ted says to win the GOP base include things that turn off the populist, but non-ideological, middle.

The other assumption -- that Bernie vs. Hillary will wrap up before Trump vs. Everybody Else -- may or many not be true. Sure, with two candidates the field can get winnowed down quicker than with over a dozen, but the stuff the party and Hillary are pulling will keep Bernie fired up for some time to come.
