Fort Bragg authorities are investigating how a civilian apparently used phony ID to get access to the North Carolina base and live there for months at the barracks of the 3rd Special Forces Group.

The Fayetteville Observer newspaper reported Thursday that a spokesman for the 3rd FSG confirmed that a civilian with a fake Common Access Card (CAC) had been found living in a room at a temporary barracks and his presence had been reported to the base Provost Marshall's office.

It was not immediately known if the man had been taken into custody, or whether charges were filed, but the popular Facebook account "U.S. Army W.T.F. Moments" posted a photo showing a man in civilian clothes apparently being handcuffed.

The Facebook posting said the man allegedly got away with the ruse and lived for months at the barracks by claiming he was a demolitions expert who was attending a top-secret school at the base.

When I was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, I knew a couple guys who met a homeless girl who was quite attractive. They let her live in their barracks room with them. They would share her with each other and finally got caught when they decided to share her with Soldiers from other rooms.

On barracks inspection days she would hide in a wall locker.

That’s why you never date a chick who is too big to fit into a wall locker.

I’m not sure how that is possible. When Soldiers in the barracks deploy all their stuff they don’t take with them is placed in storage and they clear the barracks completely.
Even their vehicles are stored at government expense.

But there are exceptions...

I don’t know either but I know the kid living there and she needs a safe space plus I don’t have time to be telling the navy how to run its housing

When I was at FT Riley, a young boy in his underwear came running out of a SFC’s room one morning - bad news.

But as this was being investigated, it was discovered that he had completely falsified paperwork that he had attended ANOC, and he never should have been promoted to SFC. Quite a con man.

Hmmm. Even the Chair Force knew to open wall lockers on inspection days. Someone was slacking.

When I arrived at my first duty assignment with the 25th ID, I had a PVT assigned to my platoon who was noticeably older than his peers. I didn't give it much thought, as this was just after Vietnam and some junior enlisted soldiers in our unit had been E-5 and E-6 NCOs at one point. His nickname was "Pops", and by all accounts he was a good soldier. Never in trouble, always where he needed to be, always in uniform, etc...

Six months later, our light infantry battalion is conducting its ARTEP up in the Kahuku range of Oahu. Morning of Day six, I am informed by my PSG that "Pops" is missing. My first thought is that he fell into one of the many steep and deep ravines during the night that the Kahukus are famous for. The ARTEP came to an admin halt. We spent all day looking for "Pops". Finally received word that HPD picked him up about 10 miles away walking down the highway heading towards Haleiwa with his M-16 in hand.

The rest of the story unfolded by the time our unit RTB'd back to Schofield the next day. "Pops" was never in the US Army. He was a homeless guy a group of enlisted guys in our unit had "adopted" the previous year. They outfitted him with uniforms, forged assignment orders for him to get him on the company rolls, brought him into the barracks and chipped in to give him spending money.

I'm sure "Pops" thought he had hit the jackpot. Three hots and a cot, clothing, safety and security on post, some spending money....until he hit the Kahukus carrying full battle rattle, then he decided that being a bum was much easier.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a lot more to this story. This is because the SF are trained to think unconventionally, so are always on the lookout for holes in systems they can exploit.

A great example is how someone in the conventional Army staff decided that the SF needed uniformity in their weapons, and that all their unconventional weapons should be taken from them. A truly brain dead idea more intent on harassment than accomplishing anything.

But when the IG inspectors showed up, bags in hand, to the SF armory, all they found were uniform weapons in compliance with the new regulation. It took them a long time before they figured out that the SF had moved all their unconventional weapons to an official “field storage site”, that as such was off-limits for IG inspection.

Not feeling themselves constrained by their own regulations, the conventional command ordered the IG to break the rules, and inspect and confiscate the weapons in the field storage site anyway.

The epilogue is uncertain, but it was suggested that by the time they broke through the door of the field inspection site, they found a room filled with bows and arrows, crude clubs, and assorted frivolities.
