Remember all the science deniers in the 1990's? All the scientific community was on board?????
One of the huge problems with CFC theory is how heavy CFC compounds floated all the way to the ozone layer. Well the answer, trade winds over time would eventually blow CFC all the way up to 6.6M. Now no one ever questioned the amount of energy required for this answer let alone the implication that the time required was 50 years. Note the chart below from the article.
Under the ozone theory, the "hole" observed in 1985 was the result of CFC from the 1930's. Relatively light production at that time. However, CFC exploded in the 40's during WW2 and again in the 50's with consumer boom. YET the "hole" doesn't grow in the 90's or 2000's? Note, CFC further expanded in the 1960's yet really no trend change in the "hole"
I think it was Dupont.
DuPont owns the patent for R12 - R22 and each one becomes illegal to use as a refrigerant just as the patent expires... talk about crony capitalism
