Linus has said repeatedly that the kernel will continue on just fine without him. To me though this is the real unanswered question. Linus delegates a lot to his “lieutenants” to be sure but at the end of the day he has the authority and the clout and the aesthetic sense to keep everyone not only on the same (kernel) page but also doing things in a way that is not “stupid”. Would things go as well absent Linus? I say nobody really knows.
