When I looked into that, there seemed to be a certain red eye feature that my fish lacked. But the shape is close so would seem to be something in the bass family.
Rock Bass, a.k.a. GoggleEye

Go to freshwater forum and post your pic there.
Looks like a warmouth or as some people cal them a goggle eye perch.
Thanks. That seems to be the prevailing opinion. Appreciated.
That is what I first thought too but the jaw line is way too big.IMHO it looks like a redear sunfish

How did it taste?
Purists say they’re not good to eat, compared to bream or crappie, but I say they fry up just fine, especially if you’ve not eaten fried fish lately.
Your rules would eliminate half of all FR posts.....party pooper...
Paul, I don’t think it’s a crappie. It looks most like a rock bass but they are supposedly out of your region. It appears their most southerly range is south Georgia but I imagine that could extend into northern most Florida. Are you located there?
On the upside all the snakeheads in Florida eat any piranha that get loose!
Could be a Bluegill, and a big one at that.
I’m just northwest of Orlando.
A Gar! I just saw a photo. I’m not going fishing.
Released it... My daughter was insisting.
LOL. Now I wish I had just kept. Thanks
You were fishing in a prehistoric water hole! Or, time travel...
Yikes. I just realized your fish has a bigger mouth than a Bluegill does.
Looks like a large Cracker. FLA is a land of non native fish. We had 3 pairs of Ruby Chiclids nesting on our bank and every now and then there is a report of a Pacu being caught. All the exotics thrive in the South FLA fresh water canals, where people dump their aquariums when they move. I’ve caught a bucket full of Mayan Chiclids in brackish water along with Oscars, probably about $1000 dollars worth if I sold them to an Aquarium store. I released them all. With all these illegal fish coming in, we should build dams along our borders to stop the flow. (LOL)
