A more recent writer associated with the Bay Area was Czeslaw Milosz, who won the 1980 Nobel Prize in Literature, but he was born in Poland. I once saw him walking down a sidewalk in Berkeley, but did not venture to engage him in conversation.
Mark Twain spent some time in the Bay Area as well.
