Diana?
That is positively smashing...oh wait....
Yes, that’s why Charlotte, NC is called the “Queen City”.
If Princess Charlotte had not died in childbirth, England would have been spared Queen Victoria.
I saw what you just did there.
There is another close family connection to the name. Earl Spencer’s (Diana’s brother) 2 yr old daughter is named Charlotte Diana.
Oh that is interesting.
She is an adorable baby girl.: 0)
Ping
Charlotte does not mean “petite and feminine.” It’s the feminine form of Carl, “man,” specifically, a male of low birth. Of course, there have been plenty of kings named Carl and Charles and Karl and Carlos, and queens named Caroline or Carlotta or Charlotte but still...
It’s a pretty name, and I like the sound, but the meaning is what it is.
So what the capital of British Columbia be called?
Carolus Magnus or Karl der Grosse was crowned Roman Emperor in the year 800 by the pope. The word for king in several Eastern European languages (including Russian, Polish, Czech, Croatian, Hungarian, and Lithuanian) comes from the name Carolus (Charles).
What a beautiful name!
I remember William and Harry when they were little, and now we have George, who is as cute as a button. But finally there’s a little girl, and I can’t wait to see how they dress her.
Same here! They are like nephews who live far away hope all goes well for both of them. I was so encouraged by the Christianness of William and Catherine's marriage rites.
Here's the big brother going into the hospital with Dad to see the new baby:
I love the traditional names.
I like to look at such threads to see how many people post that They Do Not Care even though they obviously cared enough to post how They Do Not Care. In that way, this thread didn't disappoint.
My main interest here, though, isn't in reading protests from people who care so little about a subject that they take the time and effort to write a post. It's not even in royalty. My main interest is in names. My special weakness isn't dreaming about names for nonexistent children; it's reading about what I consider bad baby names. I also read threads here about names in general. We rarely seem to get these discussions, though, when we don't have famous babies or new popes.
What do I think of "Charlotte Elizabeth Diana"? Although I might've done a few things differently, this name is unlikely to appear on my Bad Baby Name list.
Earl Spencer is himself a Charles. I can imagine why someone would assume that his daughter is named after him (if not also after others, but maybe primarily after him).
Because of my interest in names, I read a number of recent news articles about the naming speculation when "Charlotte" was one of the favorites. I don't remember any mention there that "Charlotte" has either of these family connections, and I wasn't even aware of the existence of Charlotte Diana until I read this thread. Those articles were more concerned with the baby's grandfather and that Queen Charlotte.
Yet another possible family connection, not mentioned yet in this thread, is to Carole Middleton. She has a name that's more distantly related to "Charles." As others have posted here, the usual Latin form of "Charles" is "Carolus," and there are other related names, such as names in other languages and female versions. (I may also imagine someone assuming that Pippa's middle name comes from her mother's name.)
Yes i agree. If i am not mistaken Carole is the english version of Carl (masculine) or Carla (feminine) too or closer to Charlotte which i believe is French origin is Carlotta, italian origins. They’re all connected name-wise and family-wise for both the Spencer baby & Royal one.
But i found the sharing of fullname Charlotte Diana rather interesting. Of course the royal baby has the middlename of Elizabeth too. As a rule, royal female babies tend to have 3 names; and male babies 4. Earl Spencer & his daughter are aristocracy not royalty even if he has a title of ‘Earl’.
Anyway, i don’t think Kate & William’s daughter was named after Charles Spencer’s daughter. But much more because of having those names in the family. They both paid tribute to Diana. The royal also to her great grandmother and her maternal grandmother whose middlename like Kate’s is also Elizabeth.
It can be confusing lol.. all around Charlotte made a great deal more sense than Alice which was another top favourite.
P.S.- just thought of another royal name, if we wanted to throw the fishnet wider. Charlotte is also the name of Princess Caroline of Monaco’s daughter from her first marriage :) - carole, caroline, charlotte..
Yuk !
