[ A lot is disturbing about this....
That N Korea could hack an American company this bad. This shows severe vulnerabilities that have not been addressed.
That N Korea can effectively silence free speech in the US by threatening to bomb theaters.
If N Korea can do this, who else can do this.
We know about the N Korea hacking because they informed us. Who have they hacked and not told us about?
How much is N Korea in cahoots with China to share in the illegal gains from hacking? ]
How do we know it wasn’t the NSA who did the hacking and they are trying to frame the Norks???
In other words, we're hoping the North is crazy, but not stupid.
Figures. Sony would be liable, too, in the event of an attack, for having released it after being warned. Any survivors or relatives would sue everyone involved: both the theater and the distributor. Juries would be sympathetic to the victims, even though Sony would be something of a victim itself. Juries would consider that Sony has deep pockets and should compensate others.
When I was at the movie theater today, the projectionist told me that the movie theater would rather be cautious..especially after what happened in Colorado(During the filming of Batman) they don’t want to be liable if some nut who is sympathetic to North Korea comes into the movie theater and shoots it up. Even though I dont believe for a second anything will happen I can understand why the theater is doing this
Of course, if it were your money and conscience at stake, the potential cost of that belief would escalate rapidly; it's easy to believe things when we have nothing at stake. And knowing that, I presume, is why you "can understand why the theater is doing this"
9/11 resulted in Saddam dangling from the end of a noose. And he wasn't even responsible. Never say never. Besides, Democratic presidents got us into the nation's bloodiest foreign wars - WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Total body count: 600K dead GI's.
The theater, for understandable reasons, is allowing itself to be cowed by a "heckler's veto." I'm reminded of the Muslim threats, following publication of cartoons disrespectful to Mohammed, that were intended to intimidate cartoonists and periodicals into silence, often quite effectively. It's been ludicrously exacerbated by the nincompoops who recoil in horror at the thought of anyone becoming offended, as is well-chronicled here on FR.
We're still in that era, although some brave souls have exercised the kind of belief you mentioned, or just decided not to give a damn and gone ahead anyway. But, of course, it's one thing to decide to put oneself at risk, and quite another to risk others.
We should shower NK with 1000’s of dvd’s of this film from the air. Just a thought.
NK is just about the least electrified country in the world. Have you ever seen those satellite photos of Earth at night? NK is daaaaaaaark.
It was just a thought.
