Ah, yeah. Terrible way to teach. That’s probably why I don’t remember anything about Spanish. Or most everything in school for that matter. I feel I would’ve been much better off being taught to think of things, rather than remember them. Memories can easily fade.

I used to teach in this district. Here is the real story. A a significant percentage of the students are Asian (mostly Korean) and you can bet the Asian parents are not complaining one bit about the homework. In fact, they often send their children to private tutoring schools on Saturday to give them a leg up. It’s the non-Asian parents who are complaining, angry that their children have to compete.

Sorry, up to 8 hrs a night of home works is stupid

Graduated in '70 - had homework throughout. There were a few nights when the teachers didn't get together and there was too much homework to get done in 3-4 hours. Most nights was 1-2 hours for those who paid attention in class and were willing to try to ensure they had really grasped the material. Time is not always relative - if one doesn't pay attention, then sits and stares, while whining, instead of actually trying to do the homework, a short assignment can take hours. Homework prepares one for the increased responsibility of college where the student assumes greater responsibility for gathering and digesting data. Many are opposed to the things that actually prepare a child for life in the real world - take Ferguson for instance...

That’s a damn shame. I haven’t seen my cousin in a while so I can’t ask her what her kids are learning in school.

“So what if I’ll be 30 next year?

*cries in corner*

Your original post made me chuckle because my pre-college school years were from 1938 to 1950———and it seems like yesterday. :-)

I am not certain EVERYWHERE is doing it this way. Private schools aren’t. I would imagine/guess a more conservative community would be less likely to have their public schools doing it. There would be too much outrage the schools were turning their kids into morons.

I took AP courses through out high school. Finished most of my first year of college doing that. And the truth is I didn’t end up in my original major and it didn’t prepare me for life any better.

When my child went to high school I discouraged her from taking AP courses precisely because the subjects are better taught at the collegiate level. She took college prep courses, did well, and went to college. Finished in four years in her first major ( not that I cared one way or the other on that) and is now working in the field of her choice.

I see no special value in taking ‘college’ classes in high school. IF you are that smart and that advanced there are plenty of online college level courses you could take. The high school teachers are rarely (not always true but mostly so) up to the task of actually teaching at the collegiate level

Thank you - I have been chastised and it is so....liberating to know what an idiot I am.

My AP classes involved more homework than normal classes and I maintained a 4.0 average throughout college because I did the homework I learned was important to fine-tune my understanding of the topics on top of classroom lecture.

Question, unless you really pare down class size, how is a teacher (assuming the teacher cares) supposed to gauge if all the students are actually getting all the material in an hour or so each day? Homework doesn't just make work for students, it makes work for teachers too. Or, do you just not give a damn about it as long as your daughter isn't inconvenienced because she doesn't need what many students do need?

I know you must be really smart - me being so stupid and all, but how did you get the idea that I claimed your daughter was a whiner? You made an "assessment" that lots of homework was stupid, I made some general statements that included a bit about my experiences, and you somehow found it to be a personal attack on your family members. I may be stupid but you need help.

I am satisfied you understand you are stupid.

And I have had second thoughts about how I respond to some folks w/o really knowing what might be in their minds. I apologize for my abrasiveness.
