In a true atheistic, evolutionary world, his children would've starved to death.

You and I may think he's a jerk, but he's an evolutionarily successful jerk. He's reproductively fit for the the environment he's in. He doesn't have to care for the kids to ensure their survival because WE do. It's the cuckoo strategy.
