The disruption that has already ensued as a consequence of a single infected individual who was allowed to enter the country (two infected healthcare providers (and counting), Dallas Presbyterian's ER forced to close, Frontier Airlines taking a hit, schools closed, cruise ship involvement, numerous people requiring monitoring, people who have recently been in the hot zones and feeling sick walking into ER's and clinics and causing disruption and panic) is only the tip of the iceberg if rational control measures aren't put in place, and consumers will adjust their behavior accordingly. This atrociously managed crisis has the potential to devastate many service sector industries.

The services sector is an important part of the U.S. economy. According to BEA, in 2009 services accounted for 79.6 percent of U.S. private-sector gross domestic product (GDP), or $9.81 trillion. Services jobs accounted for more than 80 percent of U.S. private-sector employment, or 89.7 million jobs.
