but how do they know the weight of the bear?Footprints? Testimony of the survivor?

I’ve confused bears as black labs before. Bears can range in all sizes. Age is not a definite factor. I’ve seen six year old bears half my size and two year old bears twice my size. The little ones tend to be really smart. The big ones tend to be just big pushy slobs that don’t care about much of anything.

65 year old ladies may know when their daughter in law gained five pounds, but I really doubt they are skilled at guessing a bear’s weight? That is unless she’s married to Navin Johnson?

If I can paraphrase the immortal words of Paul Lynde in Bye, Bye Birdie: “Who needs your respect? You’re a bear. Who needs respect from a bear?!”

No, but she could say, "He was as tall as the fork in that tree branch and I socked him in the nose about here." That, combined with the depth and size of the paw prints might provide a reasonable clue.
However, 300 lbs is about average for a black bear, isn't it? And whoever thought that news reporters were accurate in such stories?

See? Everyone on FR is cranky! Bear grease - used for all kinds of cooking and lovely hair pomade - is nasty and rancid. bear meat is VERY TASTY and bear grease is a fantastic product....it will make your shoes absolutely waterproof....it will , when used as a skin softener, give you a really good result...chapped hands, use bear grease...soft hand, no painful cracks...guaranteed!!!!!

That is what our guide said. His wife fought the infections for 7 years. They did live in a very remote area so I don’t know what kind of care she received for her wounds. The bear attack happened near where they lived, afterwards he said she moved to town. I would have done the same.
