“We appreciate the assistance, but we don’t want to have people get involved because they can get hurt,” he said.

So much for the police being the public and the public being the police,the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.

I do wish that the modern police would stop discouraging members of the public from getting involved if they want to. Civic responsibility should be encouraged.
