My dad was stationed in Gitmo, when Enterprise arrived for her shake-down cruise. He arranged for me and my brother to go out one day on her training schedule.
When they say powerful, I laughed. I remember the rooster tail she made as they headed South from Cuba... and I followed her in 1968 in the South China Sea, on a WW2 era Fram2 Tin Can (USS Perkins). I don't know her true speed, but she was FAST!!!

“Actually I think there was a nuclear aircraft if not actually built it was on the drawing board. Long range bomber I believe.”
They did some testing with a nuclear powered aircraft but it had only one ‘nuclear engine’. Piston engines provide the main thrust.

“Well at least unlike superheated you might see a leak.”
Except it becomes superheated when at atmospheric pressure.

The SLAM concept missile sounds like something out of “Doctor Strangelove”. The only way to win a thermonuclear war is not to play. The idea behind SLAM was utter insanity run amok.

The Enterprise was nuclear powered. The Sunfish was powered by the WIND.
What would really have been awesome would be the Enterprise next to the Constitution, which is also stationed in Boston Harbor.

That would have indeed been AWESOME!
The Tall Ships were quite a sight though, and the USS Constitution was a part of that!
Ah..those were the days, were they not?
