So does mine—but I still use LibreOffice successfully there.
Amazing stuff coming that we could never have imagined when Dick Tracy used his first wrist radio, in the comics.(Graphic Novel now I guess)
I abandoned the iPhone since I could hardly read anything on it anyway, and now take an iPad Mini(4g) with me when I go out with the wife. I have an AT&T plan that costs me $100.00 a year and it gives me mobile access, I can even make and receive free phone calls with MagicJack app.
There is also a free service called FreedomPop, but I haven't actually tried to use it.
Cato, thanks for telling me about those video programs. I knew about Kdenlive, but not the others. I read up on them last night and think they have potential once they mature and the bugs are worked out. Lightworks seems the most impressive, but the Linux version is in beta now, and threads in their support forum reveal some serious bugs that need to be squashed before trusting it for any serious project. I’ll keep an eye on that product though.
Good point. :)
Spoken like a true geek, more interested in tinkering than getting work done.
What else is next? Warp speed?
The down side to all of this technology is less down time. And worst of all, we completely rely upon it. Some of the youngsters can't function without the technology. I know that I can because I grew up without it. But others?
And schools assume that you have it. Actually, they expect you to have it — calcs, computers, word processor like MS Office, etc. etc.
I grew up with kerosene lamps and out door toilets, I am pretty sure I remember how to use those items, but I really don't want to unless I have to.
Yes. And I bet that you can do long division, too. Most kids these days can’t.
So what happens when there is suddenly a shortage of batteries for calculators and there is no power.
People have to adapt, we just don't have a lot of experience in reverse progress, to predict how well we can adapt.
Wise Preppers have Generators and solar panels as well as rechargeable batteries. Also most cars today have 110 volt outlets, at least my 7 year old Toyota does. Just need to be sure and keep adequate fuel on hand, then you have to worry about keeping it safe from looters.
At my age I will probably just get on the d@mn train when they start loading them, who wants to outlive their Country?
Truth is very few could survive without the technology.
There was a great Twilight Zone with Burgess Meridith, I don't remember the particulars very well, but the gist of the story was, he never had time to read or do things for himself. There was a nuclear attack and he was in a bank vault or some such and when he came out he was all alone with all the time in the world to read. Don't remember exactly how but he managed to destroy his glasses with out which he could read nothing.
Of course good Preppers could figure a way to make new glasses. :)
The real problem with using all these electronic aids is that the yutes accept any answer or suggestion the device offers without question. I know this from experience, unlike that old song, The Worst is Yet to Come.
